College football: Mike Munchak won?t coach at Penn St.

College football ? Mike Munchak says he is not heading to Penn State as coach.

The Tennessee Titans coach said Wednesday he?s flattered to be mentioned for his alma mater, but insists he loves what he?s doing in Tennessee.

?You all know Penn State means a lot to me. I obviously went to school there and I?m real concerned for what they?ve gone through the last couple of months. I?m flattered that people think I?d be a great fit for the coach there,? Munchak said Wednesday after practice.

?They have not contacted me in any way or talked to me about the possibility of working there. I have not reached out to them. I have a job that I enjoy quite a bit.?

This is the third time since longtime coach Joe Paterno was fired that Munchak has denied interest in the job. He denied it the day after Paterno was fired and again Dec. 2 when his name came up in connection with the opening. He was linked again Wednesday to the job and did his best to squash the idea he might leave the NFL franchise he has worked for as either a player or coach since 1982.

North Korea names Kim Jong Un Supreme Commander (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Korea said Saturday that it has officially named Kim Jong Un as Supreme Commander, giving formal approval to his control of the country's 1.2 million-strong military and further strengthening his authority in the wake of Kim Jong Il's death.

Kim Jong Il's son and successor was given the title at a meeting Friday of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, the North's official Korean Central News Agency said in a statement.

Kim Jong Un "assumed supreme commandership of the Korean People's Army" according to a will made by Kim Jong Il on Oct. 8, the statement said.

Kim has received a string of titles from the government and state media in the wake of his father's death on Dec. 17. But the title Supreme Commander is a clear signal that Kim Jong Un is fast consolidating power over North Korea.

The North also warned Friday that there would be no softening of its position toward South Korea's government after Kim Jong Il's death.

North Korea's powerful National Defense Commission said the country would never deal with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, a conservative who stopped a no-strings-attached aid policy toward the North in 2008.

The stern message also said North Korea was uniting around Kim Jong Un, referring to him for the first time with the title Great Leader ? previously used for his father ? in a clear message of continuity. It was the latest incremental step in a burgeoning personality cult around the son following the Dec. 17 death of Kim Jong Il.

The top levels of government appear to have rallied around Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s, in the wake of his father's death. Still, given his inexperience and age, there are questions outside North Korea about his leadership of a nation engaged in delicate negotiations over its nuclear program and grappling with decades of economic hardship and chronic food shortages.

Apple Posts iTunes Match Video Walkthrough, FAQ, Setup Guide

Apple has posted a dedicated web site to iTunes Match, the company?s annual $25 service, to provide clarification on some of the most important aspects surrounding the product, including setup, availability, and usage.

?With iTunes in the Cloud, the music you buy from the iTunes Store automatically appears on all your devices,? Apple says on the new site.

?And for music you haven?t purchased from iTunes, iTunes Match is the perfect solution. iTunes Match is built right into iTunes on your computer and the Music app on your iOS devices. It lets you store your entire collection in iCloud, even music you?ve imported from CDs or purchased somewhere other than iTunes,? the Mac maker adds.

?When it?s in iCloud, it?s available on all your devices. So you can enjoy all your music anywhere, anytime ? on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, PC, or Apple TV.?

Apple then details the song matching and uploading process, and offers a setup guide, a list of frequently asked questions (FAQ), and a walkthrough video.

For example, the first question answered in the FAQ is ?Who can use iTunes Match??

Following the international rollout earlier this month, ?Anyone with an Apple ID in the U.S and select other countries can use iTunes Match,? Apple says.

The company then outlines the system requirements, which include iTunes 10.5.1 or later on Mac or PC, and iOS 5.0.1 or later on iPhone 3GS or later, iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), or iPad.

Stuff like which music formats can iTunes Match handle, and how many devices can iTunes Match support, is also explained.

Finally, there?s a blue button at the bottom of the page that says ?Subscribe to iTunes Match?. The link takes you to the setup page in iTunes, but only if your country is supported.

Perry: Abortion allowed if woman's life at risk

(AP) ? Republican presidential hopeful Rick Perry said Wednesday that he has "always struggled" with his position on abortion and clarified remarks he made a day earlier to indicate he would allow abortion if a woman's life were at risk.

The Texas governor, campaigning hard in the final week ahead of Iowa's lead-off Jan. 3 caucuses, had told a pastor Tuesday that he had undergone a "transformation" on abortion rights after meeting a woman, Rebecca Kissling, who said she was conceived during a rape. She was featured in former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's anti-abortion documentary, "The Gift of Life," and Perry attended its Iowa premier.

A day later, Perry said he opposes abortion rights in cases of rape and incest, but would allow the legal procedure if the pregnancy threatened the mother's life.

"I think I've always struggled with that issue," Perry told reporters after meeting with voters in a sports bar. "After I went to see the movie a 'Gift of Life' and had a conversation with Rebecca Kissling, and I really thought about this through the Christmas holidays and that's the conclusion I came to."

Asked if a mother's life was the only instance when he would allow abortion, he was concise as he boarded his bus: "That's correct."

In his push before Iowa holds its first caucuses, Perry is playing up his social conservative credentials. But his late shift on abortion drew questions about what exactly he believed on the issue many Iowans make their top priority.

A Time-CNN poll released Wednesday showed only 19 percent of those likely to caucus view cultural issues such as abortion and gay rights were unimportant to their selection of a candidate. A separate New York Times-CBS News poll earlier this month said 32 percent of likely Republican caucus-goers said they would not support and candidate who changed positions on abortion.

In Osceola on Tuesday, Perry told a voter he had changed his view.

"You're seeing a transformation," Perry said. "That transformation was after watching the DVD 'Gift of Life,' and I really started giving some, some thought about the issue of rape and incest, and some powerful stories in that DVD."

He cited Kissling during that meeting at an electric co-op.

"When the lady who was in it was looking me in the eye and saying, 'You need to think this through,' she said, 'I am the product of a rape' and she said 'my life has worth,'" Perry said. "It was a powerful moment for me."

3.7 million Android devices activated over the Christmas weekend

Android Central

With Christmas all said and done for yet another year, it's time for those at Google to start looking at the number of devices that got activated over the Holidays. Luckily, Andy Rubin anticipated our wondering and has given up the goods:

UPDATE: There were 3.7M Android activations on 12/24 and 12/25. Congrats team-android!

Also, as noted on his Google+ account from previously -- "activations" means you go into a store, buy a device, put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service. It does not count devices that have been resold. That's a pretty nice number -- congrats team Android indeed.

Sadrists call for new elections in Iraq

The political party loyal to radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr called Monday for the dissolution of Iraq's parliament and new elections in another move that could escalate the country's growing sectarian crisis.

The anti-American Sadrist bloc is a partner in the Shiite-dominated government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Bahaa al-Aaraji, the head of the Sadrists' bloc in parliament, said the elections are needed because of instability in the country and problems that threaten Iraq's sovereignty.

"The political partners cannot find solutions for the problems that threaten to divide Iraq," he said.

Iraq plunged into a new sectarian crisis last week, just days after the last American troops withdrew at the end of a nearly nine-year war.

The new political crisis has been accompanied by a new wave of attacks on the Iraqi capital by suspected Sunni insurgents linked to al-Qaida. A suicide bomber set off a car bomb Monday at a checkpoint leading to the Interior Ministry, killing seven people and injuring 32, officials said. Police and hospital officials said the bomber struck during morning rush hour, hitting one of many security barriers set up around the ministry's building.

Al-Maliki is in a political showdown with the country's top Sunni political figure, Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, after the government issued an arrest warrant for al-Hashemi on allegations his bodyguards ran hit squads targeting government officials.

The prime minister threatened to form a government without al-Hashemi's Sunni-backed political party, Iraqiya, which is boycotting parliament and mulling whether to pull out of the ruling coalition.

Iraq was dominated by the minority Sunnis under Saddam Hussein until the U.S.-led war that began in 2003 ousted him. Majority Shiites have dominated the government ever since, though Americans pushed hard for the inclusion of Sunnis with a meaningful role in the current governing coalition.

Bitter sectarian rivalries played out in 2006-2007 in violence that took Iraq to the brink of civil war and the latest tensions have raised fears of a resurgence of Shiite-Sunni violence.

The political crisis taps into resentments that are still raw despite years of efforts to overcome them. The Sunnis fear the Shiite majority is squeezing them out of their already limited political role. Shiites suspect Sunnis of links to militants and of plotting to topple the Shiite leadership.

The Sadrists have played an important role in maintaining Shiite domination over government ? their support last year catapulted al-Maliki back to the prime minister's office for a second term.

For the proposal to dissolve parliament to gain traction, it would take the consent of at least 1/3 of parliament, the president and the prime minister or a simple majority of lawmakers. Al-Maliki, who only secured his position after nearly nine months of political wrangling after the last elections, would likely be loathe to go through the process again and risk an unfavorable outcome.

Al-Aaraji said the proposal first needs approval of the larger coalition between the Sadrists and al-Maliki's alliance, the two most powerful Shiite parties.

A Shiite lawmaker loyal to al-Maliki, Kamal al-Saiedi, said the proposal should be studied.

"Forming the current government was not an easy issue, therefore going back in the direction of new elections would be more difficult," he said.

A Sunni lawmaker with Iraqiya, the Sunni-backed bloc of the wanted vice president, said new elections would not bring security and stability. He pointed to the prolonged negotiations that were needed to agree on the government in place now, and said a new election would only bring the same people to office.

"We need to sit around the same negotiating table and that is the only path to salvation from this current crisis," said Kamil al-Dulaimi.

Also Monday, a roadside bomb hit a passing army patrol in the Abu Ghraib area west of Baghdad, killing two soldiers and injuring two, a police officer and a doctor said.

Al-Maliki's adviser for National Reconciliation Amer al-Khuzaie, said leaders of Asaib Ahl al-Haq, one of the top Shiite militant groups, had decided to lay down their weapons and join the political system.

Asaib Ahl al-Haq, or Band of the People of Righteousness, was a splinter group from the Mahdi Army, also headed by al-Sadr. They, along with the Mahdi Army, were two of three Shiite militant groups active in Iraq that were dedicated to fighting the U.S. military presence.

Al-Khuzaie said the group had signed an agreement in recent days renouncing violence. He said they would change their name and join the political process. He said he had been negotiating for months with the group, who said they would join the political process after the U.S. military left Iraq. All American troops departed on Dec. 18.

Officials from the group were not available to confirm the decision.

U.S. officials have warned that these Shiite militant groups could turn against the Iraqi government after the American military has gone. A key test to whether Asaib Ahl al-Haq, an Iranian-funded group, is committed to becoming a peaceful part of the political process is whether they actually turn in their weapons, especially the more powerful and sophisticated weapons they're believed to get from Iran.

President Ali Saleh: A Yemenie War Criminal in Obama's Court

"Obama should retain some honor and dignity for himself and his country by refusing to allow Yemen?s terrorist, President Ali Abdullah Saleh, to enter this nation....Rather he should refer him to the International Criminal Court for prosecution of his war crimes. But that would mean America truly believes in the sanctity of life, human rights, and justice; virtues belied by its addiction to war and oil."

"Liberty, Oh Liberty, what crimes are committed in thy name."

-- Madame Roland, French Revolution, on her way to the Guillotine
?

Much like Gandhi?s Salt March in India in 1930 the ?March of Life? in Yemen began in the besieged bombed southern city of Taiz with tens of thousands of men, women, and children, walking for five days to the northern capitol city of Sana to protest the illegal immunity given the blood and money thirsty tyrant, President Ali Abdullah Saleh by the U.S.?Saudi Plan.

The plan calls for a transfer of power from Saleh to his vice president while he remains in power for three months. Yemen?s population wholeheartedly rejects this appeasing plan. Saleh is a chronic liar who has never lived up to any promise or agreement he?s ever made or signed, much life all of Israel?s prime ministers.

Upon arriving in Sana the peaceful March of Life became the ?March of Death?, when the exhausted protesters were met by the murderous Republican Guard led by Saleh?s son, who opened fire on the protesters killing at least 13 and wounding scores of civilians.

In keeping with America?s blind support of Arab dictators, the Jewish American Ambassador to Yemen, Gerald Felerstein, held a press conference at the U.S. Embassy (even prior to the arrival of the March to the capitol Sana) arrogantly and obnoxiously warning that this March ?is aimed to cause chaos and violence?it seems to have the intention not to carry out a peaceful march?and will provoke a violent response by the security forces?

These shocking remarks earned the Ambassador and the U.S. the scorn and hatred of the Yemenie population who?ve always known that Saleh is an American mole and puppet.

Like Saleh, President Obama, the Sultan of Drone massacres in the Arab and Muslim world. has betrayed his every promise as well as having shred the American Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the civil liberties of the American people.

He has shown the world that he is a spineless leader who if opposed immediately caves in. A man apparently suffering from an inferiority complex to those in power whether in Corporate America, Congress, the extreme right wing of the Republican Party, special interests, the media; and most especially to Israel that slapped him back into kosher coherence and submissiveness more so than any previous American President.

As a coddler of murderous Arab tyrants he?s been late and conflicted to act courageously and forcefully to support the Arab Spring that seeks freedom from tyranny and free democratic governments.

In an inexplicable slap to American interests in Yemen, Obama has stupidly invited Saleh to come to the U.S. under the pretense of medical treatment; making the U.S. a state that harbors terrorists turning the Bush Doctrine of attacking States that harbor terrorists on its head.

What on earth would prompt Obama to harbor and coddle this terrorist and allow him entry into the United States?

The answer my friend is the alleged ?war on terror? that has justified America?s wars and total support of dictators. As long as these tyrants purportedly are fighting a real or imagined anti-American ?terror? group, they are free to annihilate their people while keeping their rule and stolen treasures under American protection.

If you kill ?them?, you are a U.S. ally, thereby entitled to billions of tax dollars, weapons, international protection, and be hailed as a freedom fighter.

To America, Saleh?s value lies in his alleged fight against ?Al Qaeda.?.

Hilary Clinton became the first U.S. Secretary of State to visit Yemen in early January 2011, just two weeks prior to the uprising. She outlined the reason behind America?s support for Saleh the murderer.

She said:

?We face a common threat posed by the terrorists and al-Qaeda? I want to be frank about the fact that there are terrorists operating from Yemen?s territory today?stopping these threats would be a priority for any nation, and it is a priority for us.?

Hence, the lives of billions of civilians on this planet are simply collateral damage to western imperialistic thirst and greed for natural resources found under the feet of the dark people, no more so than the oil beneath Arab feet.

America thinks with its guns; not its mind, and certainly not its heart.

Obama should retain some honor and dignity for himself and his country by refusing to allow Yemen?s terrorist, President Ali Abdullah Saleh, to enter this nation.

Rather he should refer him to the International Criminal Court for prosecution of his war crimes. But that would mean America truly believes in the sanctity of life, human rights, and justice; virtues belied by its addiction to war and oil.

American can ill afford to lose the Arab and Muslim world due to its blind adoption of Israel?s policies of constant war and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians as well as its support of Arab dictators.

Past and future American Presidents in their stupefying short term foreign policy in the Arab/Muslim world will make the prophecy of a ?Clash of Civilizations? a reality; and such a conflict can only lead to the demise of the American-Israeli-European imperial hegemony.

President Obama, for the sake of your legacy, America?s national interests, American values of freedom and justice, you must reject Saleh?s entry into this country. He deserves prison not a suite in a New York City Hotel.

By The Associated Press

POSTED: 3:36 pm EST December 25, 2011UPDATED: 3:51 pm EST December 25, 2011North Carolina legislators are once again examining how automobile insurance rates are made and whether there's a better balance between risk and costs.A committee is studying how premiums are set for the state's roughly 7 million insured personal vehicles and will recommend if any changes should be made. The panel is once again revealing divisions within the powerful insurance industry.A coalition led by State Farm, Geico and Progressive say insurance companies should be given more authority to adjust their own rates. Currently all the insurance companies work together to file one annual overall rate change that applies to everyone.Nationwide and North Carolina Farm Bureau Insurance aren't in the coalition. Nationwide says there's no need to dismantle the current system. The state's average premium ranks among the 10 lowest nationally.(Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

Yemeni president says he'll leave country, head to U.S.

SANA, YEMEN _ President Ali Abdullah Saleh said Saturday he would soon leave Yemen for the United States to help make way for elections for his replacement, even as forces loyal to him opened fire on protesters, killing at least nine.

Demonstrators had marched for four days from the city of Taiz, a major opposition center, to the capital, Sana, to demand that Saleh face trial for the deaths of scores of protesters in the government's crackdown on an 11-month-old uprising. ??

Under an agreement reached last month, endorsed by the United States and Persian Gulf nations, Saleh is to be granted immunity in return for stepping down after elections scheduled for Feb. 21. He has already transferred most authority to his vice president, but retains the title of president.

As thousands of?demonstrators entered Sana chanting, "No to immunity," shots rang out. Witnesses said troops loyal to Saleh used guns, tear gas and water cannons to prevent protesters from approaching Saleh's compound, which was surrounded by tanks and other armored vehicles.

At least nine people were killed and scores injured, according to news service reports. The demonstrators later retreated to Change Square, epicenter of the uprising against Saleh.

Earlier this month, Vice President Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi presided over the installation of a unity government, including members of Saleh's party and the opposition, to manage the transition.

But Saturday's clashes underscored the limits of Hadi's authority while members of Saleh's family and other loyalists remain in influential positions, a major complaint of the demonstrators. Forces loyal to Saleh defied an ultimatum from Hadi to withdraw from the streets of Sana by Saturday.

Saleh did not specify Saturday when he would leave for the U.S., where the United Nations envoy to Yemen has said the president will receive treatment for injuries sustained during a June assassination attempt.

"I will leave for the United States in the coming days, not for treatment, but to get out of sight," Saleh told reporters.

He said he might undergo some medical checkups, but insisted he was fine and would soon be back to work with his party in the opposition.

Moody's cuts Slovenia's credit rating one notch to A1 (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Moody's Investors Service on Thursday cut the sovereign foreign currency credit rating for Slovenia one notch to A1 from Aa3, citing increasing pressure on the government's balance sheet that could arise from a potential need to further support the nation's banking system.

The outlook for the credit rating is negative, Moody's said in a statement. Slovenia is rated one notch higher, at AA-minus, by both Standard & Poor's and Fitch Ratings.

Moody's also said the downward pressure on the rating stems from a deterioration in government funding conditions due to the ongoing euro zone credit crisis.

Fitch Ratings last week said it had put Slovenia on watch for a possible downgrade, and expects to complete that review by the end of January.

Slovenia was the fastest growing euro zone member in 2007 but was badly hit by the 2008-2009 global crisis due to its dependency on exports. The economy shrank by 8 percent in 2009.

After a year of recovery, Slovenia's economy contracted by 0.5 percent in the third quarter of 2011 signaling another recession might be coming.

Vin Diesel Says Fast 6 and 7 Are on the Way

vin diesel fast furious sequels

Back when Screen Rant chatted with Vin Diesel on the set of Fast Five, the brawny actor briefly discussed how that film was being fashioned to serve as the middle chapter in a trilogy ? with Fast and Furious 6 bringing the tale of Dominic Toretto (Diesel), Brian O?Conner (Paul Walker), and their fellow professional criminal/car racer types to a conclusion of sorts.

Rumors popped up in Fall 2011 that not only was Fast and Furious 7 also on the way, but that the sixth and seventh installments in the high-octane thrills franchise could shoot back-to-back and feature the addition of Jason Statham to a cast that already includes macho leading men like Diesel and Dwayne ?The Rock? Johnson.

The Statham rumors are (officially) just hot air right now; similarly, there?s been no confirmation about the possibility of the Fast Five sequels being filmed together. However, new comments from Diesel do reveal that Fast and Furious 7 is being actively developed ? in fact, Chris Morgan (who penned the last three chapters in the franchise) has begun scripting both the sixth and seventh movies, according to the actor.

Here is what Diesel told THR, with regards to how the planned (second) Fast and Furious trilogy evolved into a quadrilogy:

?With the success of ['Fast Five'], and the inclusion of so many characters, and the broadening of scope, when we were sitting down to figure out what would fit into the real estate of number six, we didn?t have enough space??We have to pay off this story, we have to service all of these character relationships, and when we started mapping all that out it just went beyond 110 pages. The studio said, ?You can?t fit all that story in one damn movie!??

Universal is (certainly) also anxious to keep this particular cash cow alive and well, especially if?Fast and Furious 6 proves to be a box office smash ? which it almost unquestionably will be. Thus, having a seventh installment written and ready to go before cameras quickly (assuming it isn?t simply shot simultaneously with Part 6) is something the studio would definitely approve of, regardless of any potential plot contrivances needed to make it happen.

That said: Diesel does have a point about Fast Five vastly expanding the ?scope? and number of character-based subplots in the series, so a seventh chapter doesn?t (per se) require a huge stretch.

Dwayne Rock Johnson and Vin Diesel in Fast Five

Vin Diesel and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson in 'Fast Five'

Fast Five left the door open for Johnson?s relentless federal agent Luke Hobbs to continue his pursuit of Dominic and Co. in Fast and Furious 6; by all accounts, the semi-antagonist will be brought back for the sixquel (?), which has long been expected to take place in Europe ? a possibility also set up directly by Fast Five?s mid-credits scene ? and see the return of certain characters from previous installments in the series.

Universal chairman Adam Fogelson has likewise suggested that Fast and Furious 6 (and, by default, Part 7) will also continue the trend established in Fast Five ? by moving the series closer to the classic heist/caper genre, while still incorporating the hyper-kinetic chase sequences that the franchise is so well-liked for.

Fast and Furious 6 is slated to hit U.S. theaters on May 24th, 2013, so expect to hear more about both that film and Fast and Furious 7 over the upcoming months.

China village ends protests after government compromise (Reuters)

WUKAN, China (Reuters) ? Organizers of a Chinese village protest that tested the ruling Communist Party for more than a week decided on Wednesday to end their action after senior officials offered concessions over a land dispute and suspicious death in custody.

Residents of Wukan, in southern Guangdong province had warded off police and held protests over the death of activist Xue Jinbo, whose family rejects the government's position that he died of natural causes, and against the seizure of farmland for development.

But following conciliatory talks with provincial officials, village representatives urged the residents to pull down protest banners and go back to their normal lives -- provided the government keeps to its word.

"Because this matter has been achieved, we won't persist in making noise," village organizer, Yang Semao, told an assembly hall of village representatives and reporters, referring to the protests. He said protest banners would be taken down.

"They've agreed to our initial requests," Yang told Reuters. But he added a caveat: "If the government doesn't meet its commitments, we'll protest again."

Senior officials negotiating with the villagers agreed to release three men detained over protests in September, when a government office was trashed, and to re-examine the cause of Xue's death, a village organizer said earlier.

They and fellow villagers believe he was subjected to abuse that left injuries, including welts, on his body. But the government said an autopsy showed he died of heart problems. Xue was detained over the land protests that broke out in September.

Under a hot afternoon sun, about a thousand villagers gathered to hear another organizer, Liu Zuluan, explain the concessions from the government, which they greeted with loud clapping.

Although the Wukan rebellion was limited to one village, it has attracted widespread attention as a humbling rebuff to the ruling Communist Party, which values stability above all else.

CAUSE TO COMPLAIN

Wang Yang, the Communist Party chief of Guangdong, obliquely acknowledged that the villagers had cause to complain, in comments published on Wednesday in the Southern Daily, the official province newspaper.

"There was something accidental about the Wukan incident, but also something inevitable," Wang said, according to the report.

"This is the outcome of conflicts that accumulated over a long time in the course of economic and social development," said Wang, who is seen by many analysts as nursing hopes of a spot in China's next central leadership.

Guangdong is a prosperous part of China. But the wrenching shifts of urbanisation and industrialization have fanned discontent among increasingly assertive citizens, who often blame local officials for corruption and abuses.

On Wednesday morning, about 300 villagers had lined the sides of a road into the village, preparing to welcome, Zhu Mingguo, the main official negotiating with them.

A man holding a Chinese flag on a pole told the villagers over loudspeaker: "Everyone welcome the Communist Party's work team." Villagers unfurled a banner welcoming officials to come and help "solve the Wukan matter."

The Southern Daily also explained the concessions that Zhu has offered to the villagers, including foreswearing punishment of rioters who "show sincerity in working with the government to solve the problems."

Zhu also promised an impartial autopsy for the late Xue, and "transparent" disclosure in the media of how the villagers' grievances are addressed.

Underscoring government fears of unrest, in a separate protest on Tuesday in Haimen, a town further east up the coast from Wukan, residents demonstrated in front of government offices and blocked a highway over plans to build a power plant.

Pictures on a Chinese microblogging site, Sina's "Weibo" service, which could not be independently verified by Reuters, showed hundreds of people gathered in front of the offices as riot police kept watch.

Top Moments: Homeland's Explosive Finale, Mindy Kaling and Bill Clinton... Reunited At Last (omg!)

Our top moments of the week:

10. Best Silent Killer: When it came time for the jury to have at the final three Survivor: South Pacific contestants, the most vicious commentary of all comes from an unexpected source ?Whitney ? the sweet Southern belle. "Albert, you're sleazy," she says. "Coach, you used Christianity to manipulate your whole tribe. And Sophie? You're the most condescending person I've ever met." Are you sure about that, Whitney? Because that condescending person managed to snare enough votes to win.

9. Most Biting Remark: Top Chef delivers a Christmas miracle, or perhaps just a case of good triumphing over evil, when designated villain Heather gets eliminated while Beverly, her season-long nemesis and victim of her harsh verbal volleys, lands at the top of the Quickfire and Elimination challenges. And leave it to Tom Colicchio to rub it in even more. Aghast that Heather opted not to use a pressure cooker for her dish, the head judge snarks: "Beverly used the pressure cooker and she's not here [in the bottom three]." Now that's what you call a burn.

8. The Out of Time (No, Really) Award: When Terra Nova's Commander Taylor and the rest of the original settlers are faced with losing their colony to the destructive Phoenix Army, he makes the ultimate sacrifice by destroying Hope Plaza. That will prevent the army from traveling back in time to attack, but also will cut off the settlers from any and all contact with 2149 and modern-day technology. Have fun in the Dark Ages, kids!

7. Best Moment of Silence:?She got kicked out of the competition by Simon Cowell?after the bootcamp round (and was then reinstated), and now Melanie Amaro is the first winner of The X Factor and the recipient of the $5 million grand prize. Will-he-or-won't-he-return host Steve Jones tries to get a word from the winner, but she can barely sing the first verse of her final performance for "Listen," before tearily telling America, "Thank you so much" and "I'm just so happy ? I don't know what to say." Let's just hope she can get it together in time for the tour?

6. Most Dramatic Party Pooper: When Taylor's husband, Russell, threatens her former BFF Camille with a lawsuit for speaking negatively about their marriage, the rest of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills get scared (understandable since none of them ever know when to shut up) and encourage Kyle to disinvite Taylor and Russell from her party for fear they'll all get sued too. Unfortunately, Taylor doesn't get the message and shows up at the party in her 90210 best only to be turned away. Kyle tries to make everything better by sitting in the back of Taylor's limo crying as the Armstrongs are about to drive away. But apparently with this crowd, even the most dramatic waterworks do not equal an invitation.

5. Worst Holiday Tradition: Conan O'Brien is not Jewish (obviously), but he wants to celebrate Hanukkah too... while paying homage to one of the grossest movies ever, that is. To mark the first night of the festival of lights on his talk show, O'Brien debuts the Human Centipede menorah. Out trot nine bodysuit-clad people who are attached mouth-to-butt with a giant candle on each of their backs (here's hoping they were all paid very handsomely.) "Yes, I'm going to hell," Coco acknowledges. And we're all going to have nightmares for more than eight nigh

4. Sweetest Death: On the season finale of American Horror Story, everybody dies! No, really! With a poetic grace note on Ryan Murphy's let's-kill-'em-all strategy, Ben (Dylan McDermott) is strung up by the chandelier by his scorned mistress, who stages it to look like a suicide. Thus the Harmon family ? including the thought-to-be-stillborn twin who is apparently Ben's child, not dead and not the Antichrist -- is reunited... and finally at peace. Sure, they're trapped in the house that led to their undoing for an eternity, but they seem to be OK with that, if their final scene is any indication. After scaring off the new owners with some Beetlejuice-style trickery, the family gathers with Moira, the (as it turns out) friendly ghost maid and decorates their Christmas tree together.

3. Strangest Bedfellows: Looking for a totally to-die-for Rachel Roy jumpsuit and/or thoughts on the future of post-Kim Jong Il North Korea? Then check out Bill Clinton and Mindy Kaling's awkward but awesome joint Today show appearance! The odd couple's segment about gift book picks becomes a political one-on-one when Ann Curry clumsily asks Clinton for his take on Kim's death. (Why don't you want Mindy's opinion, Ann?!) When Curry finally gets to books, Clinton reveals that he is a huge Tina Fey fan (Fey's Bossypants is one of Kaling's picks), while the Office star is chagrined by the former president's highbrow selections. "I didn't know his list when I made my list," she jokes. "I would have made it more Ph.D.-friendly, because, Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor, is one of your favorite authors?" Don't worry, Mindy. We love both lists and would totally join a Clinton-Kaling Book Club. Oprah who?

2. It's About Time Award: After realizing that she is indeed in love with her brother on Dexter, Deb decides to tell him. But before she can, she walks in on her dear bro/beloved killing a Saran-wrapped Travis. "Oh God," Dex says after he spots Deb, punctuating the religious-themed season. Guys, we're thrilled you finally played the "Deb finds out" card, but please know that this incest-fueled reveal does not salvage a lackluster season.

1. Best (Non-Explosive) Finale: Homeland's first season finale has our stomach in knots as we breathlessly wait to see if Brody will carry out his suicide bombing against the vice president and his advisers. The tension reaches a fever pitch when Brody, trapped in a small space with his targets, braces himself and flips the switch ? but nothing happens. Sure, the show is having its cake and eating it too, but we're psyched to see what Sen. Brody will have up in sleeve in Season 2 ? especially now that Carrie knows (or knew, before submitting herself to electroconvulsive therapy) that Brody still has nightmares about Abu Nazir's son, Issa.

Auto-insurance researchers: 'Cell phone bans don't help reduce crashes'

All those fancy in-car docks and voice navigation? Utterly pointless. At least according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, who reckons that it's not the phone that's the issue, but "the full spectrum of things that distract." The IIHS (funded by a group of car insurers) compared crash data between states that had instituted cell phone bans and those that hadn't. According to its research, while the ban had reduced phone use (whoa, really?), it hadn't helped reduce crash rates. The National Transportation Safety Board has presented several studies linking cell phone use to an increased chance of crashing and their latest proposals would ban most hands-free systems found in major car makers' vehicles today. Hear that? That was the sound of hundreds of third-party accessory manufacturers recoiling in horror.

Brain strain: Christmas shopping when money tight (AP)

NEW YORK ? Chennel King, a nurse from Norwalk, Conn., went Christmas shopping the other day with a new holiday companion: a budget.

Despite a tough economic situation ? her husband was laid off almost a year ago ? King didn't want to disappoint her five children. So she still went to a mall in suburban New Jersey, but with a limit of $200 per child.

Plenty of Americans are having to hold back this year as the lure of flashy ads, tempting bargains and family expectations clashes with the realities of the economy. Experts in consumer behavior say that situation can strain the brain.

Scientists say we are to some extent wired for shopping. It seems to tap into circuits that originally spurred our ancestors to go out looking for food, says Brian Knutson, an associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at Stanford University.

"We are built to forage, just like rats, just like dogs," Knutson said. So we have brain circuitry that "compels us to go out there ... to get good stuff, even if we don't know what that good stuff is."

Brain scanning in his lab shows deep brain circuitry called the nucleus accumbens goes to work when people are considering products and prices. When brain cells in that area release a chemical called dopamine, people are motivated to take action, he said.

So the very prospect of shopping ? maybe brought on by ads and other marketing tools ? may arouse that circuitry and put us in a mood to hit the stores, and then to keep on shopping, he said. "You feel good... It's exciting," Knutson said.

Other circuitry reacts to excessively high prices and dampens the enthusiasm to buy, he said. The competing signals ? buy and don't-buy ? are passed to the front of the brain, in the prefrontal cortex, where a decision about whether to purchase something is apparently made, he said.

But how does that decision get made when money is tight? Knutson said he hasn't studied that question. But he notes that yet another area of the brain, called the cingulate cortex, responds to conflicts like wanting to buy something that costs too much. So maybe it pitches in when a shopper feels restrained by a budget.

King, the recent mall shopper, isn't sure how much she spent last year but it was a lot, with new bedroom sets, a camera for one daughter, a camcorder for one son, and four PlayStations. This year, she turned down the requests of her oldest two for an iPad. But she didn't consider cutting out Christmas totally. And she's mindful to buy the same number of presents for each kid.

"You only live once," King said. "If it's something my kids really want, I try to get it at the lowest possible price."

From what experts recommend about holding down spending, King was smart to set a budget ahead of time, but she probably made her task tougher by going to a mall.

When you're surrounded by attractive goods and crowds of people buying them, "natural human desires can trigger off intense cravings" to buy, says George Loewenstein, a professor of economics and psychology at Carnegie Mellon University. "Not spending when you're tempted to spend is exhausting and miserable," like not eating when you're hungry, he says.

Trying to apply will power "should be your last resort," he said. Much better is to stay away from the mall in the first place, "and it will be much easier to exert self-control."

It might be preferable to shop on the Internet so you're not surrounded by buyers, although the convenience of online shopping holds its own temptations, he said.

If you do go to a mall, commit yourself beforehand to a hard limit on spending, Loewenstein recommends. "Generally, people tend to be a lot more tempted when there is some kind of uncertainty about whether you're going to get whatever it is you're tempted by," he said.

A definite budget removes that uncertainty when a shopper spots something extra, and so it's easier for the brain to say no, he said.

But how to make that budget limit stick? "The last thing you want to do is spend with a card, especially a credit card, or even a debit card," he said. "It doesn't feel like spending."

Much better to count out some cash and put it in an envelope. When the cash is gone, you're done shopping. Even before then, the act of forking out cash introduces "the pain of paying," which can make a shopper more rational and less vulnerable to impulse purchases, he said.

To Kathleen Vohs, an associate marketing professor at the University of Minnesota, Christmas shopping on tight money is "a classic dilemma between Wants and Shoulds," between enjoying something now or holding back for a payoff later. If you don't give in now, "your wallet will be fatter" later, she says.

Her tips for exerting self-control: Shop alone. Carry a list of things you want to buy, so you don't get drained psychologically by having to make a lot of choices in stores. And if you're trying to hold down spending, ease up on other demands for self-control like dieting.

"If you're trying to watch your waist and you're trying to watch your wallet ... it's probably not a good recipe at being successful at both of those," she said.

In fact, willpower to resist overspending can get depleted over hours of shopping as people face temptations, so that self-control and wise decision-making gradually break down, says psychologist Roy F. Baumeister of Florida State University.

When it gets depleted, people will pay more money for the same products and buy more things on impulse that they don't really need, said Baumeister, co-author of the new book, "Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength."

Like Vohs, he recommends trying to limit the number of decisions or demands on self-control you face. And if that's not possible over the course of a shopping day, he said, "try not to make expensive decisions at the end."

But what do you do when you've decided to buy a $1,000 TV, but then you see another model for $1,500 that has more features? If you buy the less expensive one, won't you miss what you passed up for just $500 more?

That's the time to ask yourself, "What else could I do with that $500?" says Michael I. Norton of Harvard Business School. "It really changes your mindset."

If you think about using the money to vacation in Florida or invest in a college fund, "that can help you avoid buying more expensive things," he said.

One more tip to hold down Christmas spending comes from King, the mall shopper.

Her gift list included her niece and goddaughter, but no grown-ups.

"The adults," she said, "they have to wait till their birthdays."

On a high school hoops impostor:

?At Nimitz, Jerry never asked for a handout, which, of course, made people all the more willing to help. That summer, when school let out, some of the coaches recommended him for a job in the concession stand at the public pool. Melvon Anders supervised him. Jerry was popular with the teenage girls, a good employee?never late, never snapped at anyone, never had any money missing from his register. One dry-roasted day in August, someone asked him about his home, and Jerry pulled up Google maps on an iPhone. He showed a group, Anders included, a mountain in Haiti where he grew up. He said that most of his life was spent herding goats. They all listened dumbstruck. Goats? A hut on a mountainside? ?Who were we to question his story,? Anders says. ?He was the first Haitian most of us had ever met.?"

FACT CHECK: Gingrich off on his budget history

(AP) ? Newt Gingrich overlooked a couple of years of red ink when he asserted Thursday night that he balanced the budget for four years as House speaker. And in claiming sole credit for the achievement, he glossed over the fact that budgets are not a one-man show: There was a Democratic president in town, too.

In the last debate before the leadoff Iowa Republican presidential caucuses, Gingrich persisted in repeating a claim he has made often in the campaign, sometimes more accurately than others. Here and there, other candidates, too, reprised misstatements or partial truths from the string of debates and from the stump. Mitt Romney once again declared he has spent his life in the private sector, once again ignoring his years as governor and political candidate.

A look at some of the claims in the debate and how they compare with the facts:

GINGRICH: "I balanced the budget for four straight years, paid off $405 billion in debt ? pretty conservative."

THE FACTS: In the 1996 and 1997 budget years, the first two years he shaped as speaker of the House of Representatives, the government actually ran deficits. In 1998 and 1999, the government ran surpluses. Two more years of surpluses followed, but Gingrich was gone from politics by then and had nothing to do with them.

Moreover, the national debt went up during the four years Gingrich was speaker. In January 1995, when he became speaker, the gross national debt was $4.8 trillion. When he left four years later, it was $5.6 trillion, an increase of $800 billion.

To be sure, Gingrich did not single-handedly deepen America's debt, just as he didn't balance any budgets on his own. He was a driving force along with Democratic President Bill Clinton and figures in both houses of Congress in the economic setbacks and advancements of that time.

___

ROMNEY: "I spent my life, my career, in the private sector."

THE FACTS: Except, that is, for four years as Massachusetts governor, recent years running for president in the 2008 and 2012 elections, a few years running the Olympics, and the time he put into his failed run for a Senate seat in 1994.

In essence, Romney has devoted himself to political endeavors since his successful run for governor in 2002, and has been pursuing the presidency for five years.

The month after his term as governor ended in 2007, he announced his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination. After John McCain defeated him for the nomination, Romney devoted himself to building a political network, helping Republican candidates raise money, and writing a book that set the stage for his second run for president.

Indeed, Romney, who made his fortune as founder of the investment firm Bain Capital, has not held a private-sector job with a regular paycheck in more than a decade.

___

MICHELE BACHMANN: "We have an IAEA report that just recently came out that said literally Iran is within just months of being able to obtain that (a nuclear) weapon."

RON PAUL: "There is no U.N. report that said that. It's totally wrong, what you just said."

Bachmann: "It's the IAEA report."

THE FACTS: As Paul said, the report of the International Atomic Energy Agency does not state that Iran is within months of having nuclear arms. The U.N. agency report does suggest that Iran conducted secret experiments whose sole purpose is the development of nuclear weapons but did not put a time frame on when Iran might succeed in building a bomb, and it made no final conclusion on Tehran's intent.

Bachmann also erred by arguing that Iran has "stated they will use it (a nuclear weapon) against the United States."

Iran vehemently rejects that it is developing a nuclear bomb, let alone that it plans to drop one on the U.S.

___

ROMNEY: "I'm firmly in support of people not being discriminated against based upon their sexual orientation. At the same time, I oppose same-sex marriage. That's been my position from the beginning."

THE FACTS: In large measure, Romney has been consistent in those two positions, despite accusations of flip-flopping on gay rights.

He walked a fine line back in his failed 1994 Senate campaign, vowing to fight for equality but stopping short of endorsing gay marriage. That's the same line he walked Thursday night.

He has changed, though, on whether gay marriage should be addressed at the state or federal level. He has favored a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage at least since the beginning of his 2008 presidential bid, when he was the only major Republican candidate to do so. In 1994, he had said the matter should be decided by individual states. That was before the idea of a constitutional ban had gained traction in politics.

___

BACHMANN: "After the debates that we had last week, PolitiFact came out and said that everything I said was true."

THE FACTS: Not true.

For the second debate in a row, Gingrich complained that Bachmann wasn't getting her facts straight, this time when she went after him for the big money he made from Freddie Mac. In her own defense, Bachmann cited ratings from PolitiFact, a fact-checking organization that ranks statements on a scale from true to false, with the worst offender being "Pants on Fire" false.

PolitiFact rated two Bachmann statements from last week's debate. One, claiming Gingrich once believed in an individual health care mandate, was ranked mostly true. The other, that Romney introduced "socialized medicine" in his state, was judged burning-pants false.

Indeed, Bachmann has the worst record of accuracy in the Republican field, as rated by that organization and traced by others. Fully 73 percent of her statements checked by PolitiFact were judged mostly false or worse. Gingrich was wrong the next most often, 59 percent of the time.

UK crime reporter arrested in corruption inquiry (AP)

LONDON ? Scotland Yard has arrested former News of the World crime editor Lucy Panton as part of the investigation into police corruption, a former employee and British media reported Thursday.

Police declined to confirm the report, saying only that a 37-year-old female journalist was arrested in Surrey, a county south of London, shortly before dawn. Authorities in Britain rarely name suspects until they have been charged.

Several U.K. media outlets named the journalist as Panton. A former News of the World employee also told The Associated Press that Panton was the person arrested, speaking anonymously because he still works in the media industry.

The phone hacking scandal in Britain has forced media mogul Rupert Murdoch to close the tabloid and prompted the arrests of more than a dozen former reporters. Several senior Murdoch lieutenants have been forced to resign because of the scandal.

Panton served as the News of the World's crime editor. A report in the Guardian newspaper earlier this year identified her as being married to a Scotland Yard detective.

Panton had high-level contact with the Metropolitan Police; a list of meetings made public earlier this year notes that then-Assistant Commissioner John Yates met Panton and her then-boss, News of the World editor Colin Myler, for dinner in November 2009.

That was only a few months after Yates had decided not to reopen the police investigation into allegations of systematic phone hacking at the paper. Yates was one of two top Scotland Yard officers to quit over his failure to tackle the scandal.

Myler, whose career as editor also was cut short by the scandal, on Thursday told a wide-ranging inquiry into media ethics that he had no reason to believe that phone hacking went beyond a single rogue when he took over at the paper in 2007.

But he told the inquiry that by 2008 he had changed his mind, citing an incriminating email uncovered during a lawsuit which suggested that others were involved in the practice.

That drew questions from inquiry lawyer Robert Jay, who asked why Myler was still suggesting to Press Complaints Committee in 2009 that only one rogue reporter was to blame for phone hacking.

When inquiry lawyer Robert Jay gently asked whether "it might be said that you didn't give them quite a full and frank answer. Can I suggest that?" Myler dodged the question, saying instead that he had "no reason not to give them a full and frank answer."

Myler wasn't pressed on the inconsistency, or on other apparent contradictions.

For example, Myler assured the inquiry that he and his team would "make sure that pictures were taken properly, not in breach of the (Britain's media) code."

But he wasn't quizzed about one of the most notorious incidents of his career, in which, as editor of the Sunday Mirror in 1993, he published hidden camera pictures of Princess Diana working out at a private gym.

The inquiry is charged with clearing the rot from Britain's scandal-tarred media industry, but the relaxed approach of the inquiry's cross-examination is facing criticism.

"It's a bit like being slapped around with a wet fish," said Mark Stephens, a media lawyer and consultant, who has worked for the AP in the past.

The inquiry, led by Lord Justice Brian Leveson, could recommend wide-ranging changes to Britain's media industry.
