Julian Assange lashes out at President Obama's UN free speech comments

WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, mocked President Obama in a video addressed to the UN Wednesday. He asked how Obama could support freedom of speech in the Middle East, but not in the context of WikiLeaks?

Assange, who has been holed up in the?Ecuadorean Embassy?since June to avoid extradition, made the comments at a packed event on the sidelines of the?United Nations General Assembly.

Assange mocked Obama for defending free speech in the Arab world in an address to the?United Nations?on Tuesday, pointing to his own experience as evidence that Obama has "done more to criminalize free speech than any other US president."

"It must have come as a surprise to the Egyptian teenagers who washed American teargas out of their eyes (during the Arab Spring) to hear that the US supported change in the Middle East," Assange said.

"It's time for President Obama to keep his word ... and for the US to cease its persecution of WikiLeaks," he said.

Assange's combative comments, plus statements made by Ecuadorean Foreign Minister?Ricardo Patino?and his other allies at the event, suggested no solution is in sight to the diplomatic standoff surrounding the 41-year-old Australian.

British authorities have surrounded the?Ecuadorean Embassy?and said if Assange sets foot outside, they will arrest him and extradite him to?Sweden?to face rape and sexual assault allegations.

Assange's lawyers and?Ecuador's government?fear that could lead in turn to extradition to the?United States, where they say he would face "inhumane" prison conditions and even the death penalty.

Assange, who looked to be in good health as he sat at a desk in front of a bookshelf and addressed the 150 or so people at the event, said Britain and?Sweden?have so far refused to provide guarantees he would not be extradited to the United States.

US and?European government?sources have countered that the?United States?has issued no criminal charges or launched any attempts to extradite Assange.

Patino is scheduled to meet with British Foreign Secretary?William Hague?in New York on Thursday to discuss Assange, and he said there are "multiple paths" that could lead out of the standoff. Yet, in an interview with Reuters following the U.N. event, Patino made clear that?Ecuador?is not willing to cede much ground.

"The ball's in their court right now," Patino said.

Patino held in his hands a mimeographed copy of an 1880 agreement signed between Britain and?Ecuador, which he said prohibits extradition in cases such as Assange's. He said he would show the document to Hague on Thursday.

Patino rigorously defended?Ecuador's decision to grant political asylum to Assange, expressing disbelief that Britain is "determined" to arrest the former computer hacker even though he said there are no criminal charges against him. "This means you have reason to suspect he's being persecuted," Patino said.

He said Assange is in relatively good spirits but expressed concern his physical and psychological condition could deteriorate.

"I think of myself, how I'd react in that situation, not being able to go outside, being isolated," Patino said. "It's practically like being jailed."

Gut bacteria could could play key role in development of type 2 diabetes

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The number of people suffering from type 2 diabetes world-wide has risen rapidly in recent years, and scientists estimate that just as many people could be suffering from the illness without realising it. New research now indicates that your gut bacteria can reveal whether you suffer from the disease.

"We have demonstrated that people with type 2 diabetes have a high level of pathogens in their intestines," says professor Jun Wang from the University of Copenhagen's Department of Biology and Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research.

Important intestinal bacteria

The 1.5 kilograms of bacteria that we each carry in our intestines have an enormous impact on our health and well being. The bacteria normally live in a sensitive equilibrium but if this equilibrium is disrupted our health could suffer. In the new study, scientists examined the intestinal bacteria of 345 people from China, of which 171 had type 2 diabetes. The team managed to identify clear biological indicators that someday could be used in methods that provide faster and earlier diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

The research, which was recently published in the scientific journal Nature, also demonstrated that people with type 2 diabetes have a more hostile bacterial environment in their intestines, which can increase resistance to different medicines.

Similar studies carried out on sufferers of type 2 diabetes in Denmark also discovered a significant imbalance in the function of their intestinal bacteria and composition. Future Danish studies will examine whether intestinal bacteria is already abnormal in people that are deemed to be at risk of developing diabetes.

"We are going to transplant gut bacteria from people that suffer from type 2 diabetes into mice and examine whether the mice then develop diabetes," says another of the lead scientists behind the project, professor Oluf Borbye Pedersen from the University of Copenhagen and centre director at LuCamp, the Lundbeck Foundation Centre for Applied Medical Genomics in Personalised Disease Prediction, Prevention and Care.

International research team investigates gut bacteria

By working together, a team scientists from the University of Copenhagen and the Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) was able to make to several breakthroughs in the field of 'metagenomics'.

Scientists working on the EU research project MetaHIT have uncovered more than 3.3 million genes from gut bacteria found in people from Spain and Denmark. These genes could play a key role in understanding and treating a range of serious illnesses. According to Professor Karsten Kristiansen from the University of Copenhagen's Department of Biology, the recent discovery is an important step in the comprehensive international research that is currently underway to investigate the interplay between intestinal bacteria and health.

"The European and Chinese working on the MetaHIT project were able to make important new discoveries about the relationship between intestinal bacteria and health. The new discovery indicates a possible connection between type 2 diabetes and the intestinal bacteria in Chinese people," Kristiansen says.

"It is important to point out that our discovery demonstrates a correlation. The big question now is whether the changes in gut bacteria can affect the development of type 2 diabetes or whether the changes simply reflect that the person is suffering from type 2 diabetes."

Appropriate sequencing of treatments among men with advanced ...

Whether a man is initially diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer or progresses to have metastatic disease over time (after failure of standard first-line therapies), sooner or later they are all going to need ? in consultation with their doctors ? to decide on ?the best? way to manage their progressive disease through sequential or concurrent use of a number of recently approved agents (always assuming that cost and access are not determining factors). The problem is that ? at least at present ? there is no really appropriate way to determine what (if anything) is most likely to have the greatest effectiveness in an individual patient.

A case report published recently by Colbourn offers an excellent example of the complexities of this problem. Colbourn describes the following sequence of therapeutic interventions in a man of 58 years, initially diagnosed with an advanced form of prostate cancer in 2006:

  • Initial management with radical prostatectomy followed by androgen deprivation therapy (but his PSA continued to rise post-treatment).
  • Enrollment in a clinical trial of HE3235 for 6 months (but his disease subsequently progressed again).
  • Treatment with docetaxel-based chemotherapy for 4 months (followed by palliative radiation therapy).
  • Treatment with cabazitaxel-based chemotherapy, initiated in October 2010 (at which time his PSA level was > 5,400 ng/ml).

This sequence of treatments makes perfectly reasonable sense at a time when sipuleucel-T, abiraterone acetate, and enzalutamide were not approved therapeutic agents (although the patient may have been eligible for enrollment in the one or more clinical trials of abiraterone acetate or enzalutamide or other agents during this time frame).

What came next, however, was not exactly predictable:

  • The patient?s condition stabilized within weeks.
  • His PSA level demonstrated a progressive decline.
  • Continued cabazitaxel-based therapy allowed him to come off pain medications and to resume his normal activities.
  • As of January 2012, after 16 cycles of cabazitaxel, his PSA had declined by > 80 percent (to 994 ng/ml).

Colbourn further reports that the patient tolerated cabazitaxel well; needed only occasional dosing with myeloid growth factors for management of neutropenia; and experienced only mild diarrhea.

Why did this man respond so well to cabazitaxel, after relatively rapid failure in response to other forms of therapy? How can we optimize the likelihood that other such men could be identified with accuracy, such that cabazitaxel could be administered early? Is it possible that this man, if treated with cabazitaxel immediately after his radical prostatectomy, might have shown an even better response to treatment?

These are the sorts of questions that we need to be able to answer if we are going to be able to truly individualize treatment in the most appropriate manner for men with clinically significant prostate cancer. And, as we bring more products through clinical trials and make them available for the treatment of progressive prostate cancer, the pressure to be able to know who is most likely to respond best to specific combinations of drugs (or just individual drugs as in this case study) is only going to increase.

Shocker: Nintendo Wii U said to be region-locked

Shocker Nintendo Wii U will be regionlocked

The forthcoming Wii U console from Nintendo will be region-locked, just like the original Wii and the 3DS, Nintendo UK told Eurogamer. That means you won't be able to play obscure (or early) Japanese imports on it, and customs officials won't get anything to break up the monotony of seized cigars and bushmeat.

Prep hockey growing in Washington area, but many top players still leave

Chris Bond used to awaken to his mother's voice, eat a mom-made breakfast, back out of his Centreville garage and drive off to school to join classmates and ice hockey teammates he had known for years.

But as a senior in search of a college hockey scholarship, the All-Met defenseman from Bishop O'Connell felt compelled to give up his familiar lifestyle, like so many Washington hockey prospects before him.

After moving in with strangers in Kansas for this school year, Bond now wakes himself, makes his own breakfast, scrapes the Topeka frost off his silver 2004 Saturn Vue and passes horses and silos en route to Washburn Rural High School. There he pads through hallways with students he has little contact with outside of school.

After classes, Bond reports to the Topeka RoadRunners of the North American Hockey League, the only high school student on a team whose season stretches from September until as late as May.

As a teenage hockey refugee, Bond is following a path similar to many of the Washington area's top young talents, an exodus unique to their sport. Players for years have skated off to Northeast prep schools or Midwest junior hockey towns where the competition is faster and more physical and the spotlight greater.

With the growth of youth hockey in Washington in recent years, it is not as obvious of a decision as it used to be. But the road out is still the road most taken.

"I felt that leaving would give me more opportunity to pursue my dream of playing college hockey and give me more exposure to college coaches than playing in D.C. would," said Bond, 18, who is taking an online religion course so he can graduate from O'Connell this spring.

"We knew last year that he had reached the top of the food chain as far as hockey goes here in the local area," said Robert Bond, Chris's father, who along with wife Diane visits his son every month or so and watches the Topeka games online. "We had been preparing emotionally and mentally for him to go away. As hockey players and hockey parents, you get used to doing that because that's what you have to do."

Ten of 15 Washington-area players currently competing in Division I men's hockey left home before or during their high school careers to attend schools elsewhere.

Two of the three juniors on last year's All-Met team -- Bond and former Gonzaga goalkeeper Matt Tyler -- bypassed their senior years to take what they thought were the necessary steps to better secure their hockey futures.

That transition extends well beyond the rink, from the mundane -- as a public school student, Bond has to pick out clothes instead of slipping into the standard private school attire he had worn for years -- to the major.

"You go from somewhere you had good friends you've known for a while, kind of a big man at school, and now you just go into a brand-new school as a senior where no one knows you," said Tyler, who moved with his mother to the Chicago area, where he is playing for Team Illinois and attending Hinsdale Central High. "Everyone already has their foundation friends, so it's hard to put yourself into those groups when you have such a strict schedule you're keeping to."

Ezine Marketing ? 5 Ways To Skyrocket Your Ezine Open Rate ...

Sunday, September 23rd, 2012

Do you know the open rate for your email newsletter? The open rate is the percentage of people who actually open and read your newsletter. Most better email distribution programs can give you fairly detailed statistics about your open rate, including the percentage that opened the broadcast, the links that they clicked on (called click-throughs), the specific subscribers who opened the ezine, and in some cases, info about which issues were forwarded to others.

A good open rate is considered to be 30-40%, which means that between 30 and 40% of your list is actually reading your broadcast. That number mean seem disappointing, as you want everyone on your list to read your ezine. Unfortunately, a 100% open rate will probably never happen for most of us, as most people are simply too busy to pay close attention to the bulk of email that they receive.

If you?re using your ezine as your ?stay in touch? device for your email list as the way your prospects get to like, know and trust you so that you?ll be the top of mind person they contact when they are ready to fix the problem that ails them, then you want to ensure that as many of them as possible open your ezine when it arrives. It?s a crowded world out there in the world of email newsletters and can be difficult to make yours stand out above the rest.

Here are 5 strategies you can use to

Anger for Islam ties players behind prophet film

DUARTE, Calif. (AP) ? The shared belief that radical Islam threatens the world brought together an ex-convict, an insurance salesman and a Christian charity in production of a crudely crafted film that ridicules Muslims and the prophet Muhammad and has incited violent protests across the Middle East.

Media for Christ, a nonprofit that raised more than $1 million last year "to glow Jesus' light" to the world, was listed as the production company for the film. Steve Klein, a California insurance salesman and Vietnam War veteran who has spent years protesting at mosques and espousing hatred of radical Muslims, acted as the film's promoter.

And Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, who authorities say has used multiple names and was convicted of bank fraud, says he managed logistics for the film.

Federal authorities have identified Nakoula as the key figure behind the film. A federal law enforcement official told The Associated Press on Thursday that authorities had connected Nakoula to a man using the pseudonym of Sam Bacile who claimed earlier to be writer and director of the film.

Most of "Innocence of Muslims" was shot in about two weeks inside a squat warehouse that serves as the offices of Media for Christ, according to Eric Moers, who served as chief electrician for the production.

What prompted Media for Christ's involvement isn't known because the organizations' leaders have not spoken publicly. And much about the film remains a mystery, notably who financed it.

Media for Christ, which produces a program called "The Way TV," reported spending nearly $650,000 on "TV recording production" in 2011. But the organization did not break down those costs so it's unclear if any of that money was spent on the film.

The clumsily produced movie, which looks like a spoof, alternately portrays Muhammad as a fraud, a womanizer and a child molester. Despite its poor production value, the film would have cost at least tens of thousands of dollars to make because of the equipment used and the professional actors and stage hands who were hired.

The permit, issued by Film LA, could have cost under $1,000 though details aren't known because the document has been sealed at the request of federal law enforcement officials.

Moers said the film took 15 to 16 days to shoot and 90 percent of the work was done at the Media for Christ studios. He said one day was spent at a movie ranch in Santa Clarita, and one day was spent filming at the home of the man he knew as Bacile.

Most of the film was shot using a backdrop to simulate other locations. The crew members received sheets with the scenes each day ? never a full script ? and Moers said there was no mention of the word "Muhammad" throughout the filming. Other actors have come forward to say references to Muhammad were dubbed after the film was shot and they had no idea the film would be so denigrating.

"I'd say this was the most unprofessional professional film I've worked on," said Moers, who estimated the cost of production at $100,000. "I don't think anyone took it seriously."

He said he was paid with a check issued on the account of Abanob Basseley Nakoula, the 20-year-old son of the purported filmmaker.

While Klein has granted a steady stream of interviews and is unapologetic for the film, Nakoula has disappeared since talking to an Associated Press reporter in his driveway Wednesday. And Media for Christ President Joseph N. Abdelmasih has not spoken publicly.

Tax records for the charity do not identify any donors other than Abdelmasih, who lent the organization at least $30,000. He did not return phone messages and an email sent to the charity. Kamal Rizk, listed as vice president on federal records, did not return several phone messages.

Abdelmasih, a Christian originally from Egypt, has spoken out against radical Islam and participated in a protest against a proposal to build a mosque and Islamic cultural center near the World Trade Center site.

The Media for Christ offices are located just off a freeway and next to a mall with big-box stores in the quiet Los Angeles suburb of Duarte. There is no sign on the building identifying the nonprofit.

City Manager Darrell George said Media for Christ held a valid business license since 2006 and no issues had ever come up, until authorities confirmed earlier this week that the group was listed on the film permit.

One of Klein's platforms was a weekly show on Media for Christ's satellite network, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Klein has a long history of anti-Muslim activities. He founded Courageous Christians United, which conducts protests outside abortion clinics, Mormon temples and mosques. He also started Concerned Citizens for the First Amendment, which preaches against Muslims and publishes volumes of anti-Muslim propaganda that Klein distributes. The Southern Poverty Law Center says they have been tracking Klein for several years and have labeled two of the organizations he is affiliated with as hate groups.

'Rehab with Dr. Drew' jettisons celebrity addicts

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

For five seasons, "Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew" showed the painful truths -- and occasional triumphs -- of addiction treatment through the eyes of the famous. But for season six, there's a twist: The celebrities are gone, and regular folks are in. Dr. Drew Pinsky will take on the desperate situations of eight non-celebrities and try to make them well again.

"Addiction is a disease that affects everybody; it cuts across all classes, all ethnicities," he told TODAY's Savannah Guthrie Wednesday. "It's really, to me, the medical problem of our time."

And he had a sobering reality to share: "Your probability of dying, if you need to see me (for addiction treatment), is higher than (from) the significant majority of cancers."

Pinsky was joined by Denise Mariano, whose son is one of those treated in the new season. She noted that it all went wrong for him when he became addicted to prescription painkillers.

"It's pills and pills and pills and then they go to the heroin because instead of $30 a pill, you have to pay $5 a bag, and it's pretty much the same substance," she said.

"Parents that say 'Not?my kid' -- scariest words a parent can say," said Drew. "Pills, pills, pills.... Pills are the way people get hurt today. It's the gateway, and it's a killer. It's both."

See how regular people do when taken under Dr. Drew's wing when the new season of "Rehab with Dr. Drew" airs on VH1 on Sunday.

Do you think the switch to ordinary people on "Rehab With Dr. Drew" is a good one? Let us know on Facebook!

Obama: Romney did not 'have facts right' on attack

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (AP) ? President Barack Obama says Republican Mitt Romney "seems to have a tendency to shoot first and aim later."

Obama, in an interview with CBS News' "60 Minutes," said Romney "didn't have his facts right" when he criticized U.S. officials for their initial response to protests at the U.S. embassy in Egypt.

White House press secretary Jay Carney read Obama's answer on a flight to Las Vegas, where Obama is scheduled to gave a campaign speech.

Obama said that as president, he has learned it's important to ? in his words? "make sure that the statements that you make are backed up by the facts."

Asked if Romney's remark were irresponsible, Obama said he would let the American people judge that.

No negative impacts from repeal of DADT, study reveals

Updated at 5:40 p.m. ET: The repeal of the military?s ?don?t ask, don?t tell? policy in 2011 has not had a negative impact on force readiness, recruitment or retention, contrary to predictions that it would, according to a new study published Monday.

The policy, implemented in 1993 while then President Bill Clinton was pushing for openness in the military, was repealed on Sept. 20 last year. Before its enactment and the repeal, service members had said having openly gay troops would harm the military.

But the study by the Palm Center, which conducts research on sexual minorities in the military, determined those concerns were unfounded. The research by nine scholars, some professors at military academies, began six months after the policy (known as DADT) ended and wrapped up near the one-year mark.

The scholars said they interviewed opponents and advocates of the repeal, as well as active duty service members who are gay, and conducted on-site field observations of four military units, among other research. They also reached out to 553 of the nearly 1,200 generals and admirals who signed a 2009 letter saying the repeal would undermine the military and eventually got interviews with 13 officers.

?Our conclusion, based on all of the evidence available to us, is that DADT repeal has had no overall negative impact on military readiness or its component dimensions, including cohesion, recruitment, retention, assaults, harassment or morale,? according to the study. ?Although we identified a few downsides that followed from the policy change, we identified upsides as well, and in no case did negative consequences outweigh benefits. If anything, DADT repeal appears to have enhanced the military?s ability to pursue its mission.?

Their research also showed that the repeal hadn?t been responsible for any new wave of violence or physical abuse among service members and appears to have enabled some gay troops to resolve disputes around harassment in ways that were not possible before.

However, there were two ?verifiable resignations? of military chaplains due to the repeal, which also triggered a drop in individual morale for some service members who were opposed to it, the study said.

Implementation of the repeal was "proceeding smoothly" across the Department of Defense, said a spokeswoman, Eileen M. Lainez.

"We attribute this success to our comprehensive pre-repeal training programs, continued close monitoring and enforcement of standards by our military leaders, and service members' adherence to core values that include discipline and respect," she said in an e-mail to NBC News. "Defense department leadership and the services remain engaged in implementation, and a formal monitoring process ensures continual assessment."

The Center for Military Readiness, an independent public policy group specializing in the military and social issues, has previously questioned success of the repeal.

?From the standpoint of a?small minority of LGBT personnel, repeal certainly was a ?success? on September 21, the first day after repeal implementation,? the group said in a May 16 blog on its website. ?It is too soon, however, to draw conclusions about the consequences of LGBT law (formerly DADT) and related policies for most people in the military. The poor economy will continue to mask potential recruiting and retention problems for years to come.?

The group did not immediately reply to a request for comment by NBC News on the Palm Center study.

Since the repeal, the Defense Department has held a gay pride event?and allowed service members to march in pride parades in uniform, according to reports.

During a May 10 briefing, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the repeal was ?going very well? and was not impacting morale, unit cohesion or readiness.

?And very frankly, my view is that the military has kind of moved beyond it,? he said.??It's become part and parcel of what they've accepted within the military.?

The Palm Center is part of the Williams Institute, an independent think tank conducting research on sexual orientation and gender identity law and public policy, at the University of California Los Angeles, School of Law.

Obama on campaign trail in Florida with Charlie Crist

SEMINOLE, Florida (Reuters) - President Barack Obama kicked off a two-day bus tour of the key election battleground state of Florida on Saturday with former Florida Governor Charlie Crist, who endorsed Obama's 2008 rival John McCain but has since left the Republican Party.

Trying to build on the momentum of this week's Democratic National Convention and overcome another tough jobs report, Obama is spending the weekend canvassing a state that he and his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, both want to win in order to achieve victory in the November 6 U.S. election.

The Democratic incumbent hopes Crist, a once popular Republican governor, will help Obama appeal to political independents, who are likely to determine the victor in the state.

"We have a leader with a cool head, and his name is President Barack Obama," Crist told the crowd of some 11,000 at an outdoor rally.

"He is working hard for the middle class. He is working hard for Florida," Crist said.

Crist campaigned for Republican presidential nominee McCain in 2008 but left the Republican Party in 2010 when polling suggested he would lose the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate to Marco Rubio, a favorite of the conservative Tea Party movement. Crist ran as an independent and Rubio won in a three-way race.

Crist embraced Obama - literally - as the president campaigned for his economic stimulus bill in 2009, giving him a big hug that was videotaped and replayed endlessly. It reinforced Republican suspicions that Crist was not a true conservative.

Obama, with sleeves rolled up and no tie, embraced Crist again on Saturday after his remarks.

"I want to thank Charlie Crist for his introduction, for his support, for showing that the values that we're fighting for are not Democratic values or Republican values, they are American values," Obama said.

'ROMNEY DON'T CARE'

Obama has traveled to Florida 10 times so far this year, according to his campaign. Obama used his stop on Saturday to criticize Romney and his running mate, congressman Paul Ryan, for their opposition to his 2010 healthcare law and proposals to reform Medicare, the popular government health insurance program for the elderly.

"By the way, Florida, you should know I will never turn Medicare into a voucher system," he said. "No American should have to spend their golden years at the mercy of insurance companies."

Ryan proposed a plan two years ago that would transform Medicare into a program in which recipients would use vouchers to buy private insurance.

Romney has also pledged to repeal the healthcare law often called "Obamacare." Obama told the crowd the former Massachusetts governor's plan should be called "Romney don't care" and joked that Republicans believed tax cuts were so important they could help a person's love life.

Romney's campaign kept up the heat on the president over his economic record. Government data on Friday showed that U.S. employers added a lower-than-expected 96,000 jobs in August.

"After a disastrous convention week and a widely panned speech that was short on specifics, President Obama delivered more empty promises and false attacks today in Florida," said Romney spokesman Ryan Williams.

"As yesterday's dismal jobs report showed - and as President Obama admitted - job creation in America isn't good enough, yet he didn't lay out any new ideas for getting our economy back on track."

Brian Olinger, 40, who attended the president's rally, said Crist could help Obama in Florida. "Even though I was a Democrat, he did some good things for teachers and other people when he was governor," he said.

Romney woos voters in tightly contested Virginia

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) ? Mitt Romney is back in tightly contested Virginia, where he's trying to deny President Barack Obama another victory in a state that typically goes for Republican presidential nominees.

Virginia Beach was his first stop Saturday, and he took on Obama over looming military cuts that are the result of a budget deal between the White House and congressional leaders.

Internal campaign polls show the race is deadlocked in Virginia, which is seen as a must-have state for Romney on the way to winning the 270 electoral votes for the presidency.

The state's white, working-class voters provide hope. Romney outpolls Obama by more than 20 percentage points among these voters, who are pro-military, often rural and socially conservative.

Romney's next stop was the NASCAR race Saturday evening in Richmond.
