Iowa State U. Cancels Finance Course With Biblical Theme - The ...

January 17, 2012, 11:10 am

Iowa State University has dropped plans to offer a course on how biblical principles can be applied to business management after some faculty members and the local American Civil Liberties Union chapter complained that the class would violate the separation of church and state at the public institution. The Iowa State Daily reports that opponents of the one-credit finance course said the planned curriculum would have promoted a particular religious viewpoint and was insufficiently academic.

New BBC iPlayer stats chart the rise of 'connected' TV viewing

Thanks to widespread adoption and excellent cross-platform availability, the BBC's ubiquitous iPlayer is the perfect gauge of online viewing habits. New usage figures for December throw up little in the way of surprises, but still make impressive reading. The good old computer remains tops-of-the-client-pops for Brits, but smart TVs are taking a bigger slice of the (187 million) total requests, 7 million in fact -- a 1,000% year-on-year increase. More mobile telly-addicts saw smartphone and tablet views rise to thirteen million and ten million respectively, a growth of 163 and 596 percent. With 2012 offering ever more top gear and phones to chose from, we're expecting this trend to continue for some time yet. Square-eye stat-fans can hit up the source for the full breakdown. Hint: lots of Eastenders.

Nissan Says New iPhone Case Heals Itself

With every burnished brand from Louis Vuitton to Gucci having tried its hand at designing a case for Apple Inc.?s all-conquering iPhone, the deluged market scarcely needs another.

But there are two unusual reasons why a prototype unveiled this week is worth noting: It has healing powers, and it?s made by Nissan Motor Co.

The Japanese auto maker said this week that it has developed what it calls the world?s first ?self-healing? iPhone case. Whatever your current case, when it gets scratched in most instances the choices are to either get a new one (preferably made of rubber) or deal with it. But with Nissan?s case, there?s another option. Wait ? and the problem will go away, according to the theory.

Nissan used the same self-healing paint that covers some of its cars to coat its ?Nissan Scratch Shield? iPhone case. It can mend small scratches in under an hour, while deeper cuts may take as long as a week to heal, according to Nissan.

The trick is in the paint?s outer layer, which is made from a material called polyrotaxane. When bruised, the flexible chemical structure reacts by reverting back to its original shape. What the consumer would see is the case healing itself, according to Nissan. Also, made of a plastic variety also used in cars, the auto maker says the case material is stronger than others.

Nissan developed the technology in collaboration with the University of Tokyo and Advanced Softmaterials Inc. in 2005. The paint is used on select vehicles like the Nissan Murano 370Z and X-Trail, as well as Infiniti models. But the auto maker said this is the first time it is being applied for products other than cars.

Currently on trial in Europe, it may go on sale later this year if there is strong demand. In the meantime, Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo has started using the technology on some of its phones ? the Style Series N-03B line.

?We like to think laterally by taking the great innovations we?ve got from an automotive point of view, and looking at how they could be applied to improve everyday issues,? said Bob Laishley, a Nissan business development executive in Europe, in a released statement.

Moving pets to New Orleans | Rent Apartments in New Orleans and ...

January 16, 2012 ? 9:38 am

One of the big stresses of moving to New Orleans, and a priority of moving anywhere, ?is finding the right way to move your pet. There are many different options and ways you can go about helping your pet make the transition to your new place, depending on the type of animal you have. One of the best ways to ensure a safe and easy move for your pet is to hire a pet transport service. While this may not be ideal if you?re moving on a shoe-string budget, the little bit of extra money can go a long way in offering you peace of mind. However, there are a few things you should look for and ask about when choosing the right transport for your pet.

Look for a service that offers frequent stops for your pet

If the transport service?s trip is scheduled to take more than one day, make sure that hotel rest stops are part of their agenda. While some pet transport services may choose to save money by simply pulling the vehicle over at night and having the driver and pet sleep in the vehicle, this is not ideal. A hotel rest stop ensures that the driver is well rested and will be operating the vehicle safely, after a good night?s sleep! It should also be a priority for any hotel rest stops to include hotels that are pet friendly so that your pet isn?t left in a vehicle over night. This way, your pet will be able to stretch and sleep comfortably, and won?t be left out in the heat or cold of a vehicle!

?Find a pet transport service that will be transporting ONLY your pets.

Many quality transport services can offer you the option of transporting your pets exclusively in their vehicle. Whether you have multiple pets or only one pet, this should be an option that is available to you when asking around. Making sure that your pet isn?t transported with other animals can help to decrease the stress levels of your pet during an experience that can already be a little frightening for them. Also, while a quality transport service will require proof of vaccination, making sure that your pet is the only one being transported ensures that your furry friend won?t be exposed to other animals who could carry disease. You can also rest easy knowing that your pet won?t be exposed to any other potentially aggressive animals. Even if another animal hasn?t shown signs of aggression, moving can be a trying experience for pets and can change their behavior. Don?t risk exposing your dog or cat to any other stresses or dangers! Make sure that they can be transported by themselves!

Ask about how frequently the pet transport service you choose will be taking scheduled breaks throughout the move.

Both dogs and cats need time to stretch and use the bathroom, with dogs needing the added attention of a walk. Find out what the pet transport service?s plan is for this and how often you can expect them to stop to let your pet stretch and use the bathroom. If you have an animal with special needs, it?s imperative that you let them know what these needs are to ensure they can be accommodated.

Make the move a safe and happy one for you and your pet! Do a little homework beforehand, and you?ll find the experience can be much easier for both of you.

Idris Elba might have been celebrating at the 2012 Golden Globes for his "Luther" win, but he has a number of high-profile projects coming up also worth cheering over. MTV News' Josh Horowitz caught up with the British actor to get an update on Elba's role in several of 2013's biggest movies.

Next year, Elba will star in Guillermo del Toro's big, ambitious, monster versus robot movie "Pacific Rim." The actor has been in Toronto filming del Toro's first film since 2008's "Hellboy II: The Golden Army," and he said he can't wait to get back.

"I'm going back tomorrow morning. I've been there for five months," Elba said. "I love it. Guillermo's a genius, and the film we're making is a huge film, bad monster movie and robots and me."

If starring in del Toro's next film wasn't enough, Elba also has his own spot in the Marvel universe to worry about. The actor confirmed that his character, Heimdall, would be making another appearance soon. " 'Thor 2' for sure," Elba said. " 'Avengers,' we're not sure about, but 'Thor 2' we're going at it again."

Elba won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television for "Luther," a BBC series about a troubled detective. He shared his excitement about winning for a smaller show. "This is great. We made our little show in London, and now we're getting this worldwide recognition of it," Elba said. "Love it."

Must See HDTV (January 16th - 22nd)

After a CES related hiatus, we're back, and just in time for the premieres of a few of our favorite shows. Since we've been busy watching demo reels instead of what's on, feel free to let us know if we missed anything important during our Las Vegas trip (is anyone watching The Firm? Is it good?) Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Alcatraz
The latest show from J.J. Abrams (Lost, Fringe) finds a San Francisco where some of the most dangerous inmates of the infamous prison are suddenly reappearing on the streets. We'd explain the plot further, but given its creator there's probably no point. Given his track record, it's certainly worth given a look, even if only because Jorge Garcia (Hurley from Lost) is in it. The series premiere airs tonight, check out a quick preview trailer embedded after the break.
(January 16th, Fox, 8PM)

Archer
In case you somehow haven't caught on by now, we love Archer. While he's a terribly incompetent spy, Sterling Archer still somehow always completes his mission and in entertaining fashion. Season three is finally getting under way this week, if you've followed our advice you already have the S1 & S2 Blu-ray discs filed away and are ready to go.
(January 19th, FX, 10PM)

Justified
US Marshal Raylan Givens returns this week in season three of Justified, and with the return of his old friend Boyd Crowder to a criminal lifestyle, we're sure it will be an explosive one in Harlan County. After the events of last season, an all new lineup of interesting figures is set to try and take control of criminal enterprises in this tiny corner of the mountains, which will inevitably lead to two things: intricate, flowery dialogue, and people getting shot.

Europe must move quickly after downgrades: Merkel (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? Ratings downgrades in the euro zone by S&P underline why Europe must seal a pact to tighten fiscal rules quickly and get its permanent bailout fund up and running as soon as possible, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Saturday.

"We are now challenged to implement the fiscal compact even quicker ... and to do it resolutely, not to try to soften it," she said at a meeting of conservatives in the northern city of Kiel.

"We will also work particularly to implement the permanent stability mechanism, the ESM, so soon as possible -- this is important regarding investor trust."

Standard & Poor's on Friday downgraded the credit ratings of nine out of 17 euro zone countries. Germany kept its AAA rating, while France and Austria lost theirs.

The S&P move was not a surprise, Merkel said.

"It is one of three ratings agencies," she added. "We have taken it into account. It did not surprise us completely, given the discussion in the past weeks."

Turning to Europe's current bailout fund, the EFSF, Merkel said that the downgrade should not affect its operation.

"The necessary tasks that the EFSF must fulfill in the coming months, I very much believe, can be fulfilled with the current methods."

"The interest rates for the acceptance of certain bonds had already risen a bit anyway -- the work of the EFSF will not be torpedoed. I see no need to change anything regarding the EFSF."
