Devastating Loss Spurs Vet Group To Create ... - Business Insider

?Inspiration is important with every startup,? Anthony Allman tells me about his POS-REP mobile application, which is currently in the final stages of Apple approval. The inspiration, in the former soldier?s case, came from an unlikely avenue: destruction.

In Haiti, Chile, and more recently in the Midwest and New York City, a non-profit group of former military service members known as Team Rubicon have been on the ground providing relief to victims of disasters. One of the most vocal supporters of the group was former Marine turned-volunteer Clay Hunt.

?I cannot tell you how good it feels to be able to go into a rubble-strewn city in a third world country, and to be able to do good without wondering if everybody is about to start shooting at you,? wrote Hunt on the Team Rubicon website. ?I found a renewed sense of purpose for myself that has been missing since I separated from the USMC, and I found myself in the company of a band of brothers once again ? absolutely priceless.?

Hunt?s renewed vigor for life was overshadowed however, by thoughts of his war in Iraq with the Marines. He lost friends and was wounded in an insurgent attack. He tried to stay positive after his discharge, but his mind always wandered to the medical evacuation of a close friend. ?It?s a scene that plays on repeat in my head nearly every day, and most nights as well,? he later wrote.

His depression and post traumatic stress disorder caught up to him on March 31, 2011, when he ended his life, alone in his Houston apartment.

?The story that wasn?t told and that people don?t know for the most part, when Jake [Wood] and Will McNulty went to the funeral,? Allman told me of the founders of Team Rubicon, is that ?they found three guys from Clay?s area who were within 10 miles of him. It took a funeral to bring everyone together.?

From a devastating loss, and the revelation that there were others in the area who could have possibly helped if they knew Hunt?s struggle, the idea for POS-REP was born.

?[Jake asked] ?What do you think of a mobile app that allows veterans to communicate with each other based on their proximity??? Although Allman was working on another startup at the time, he left that organization soon after and began developing the idea.

The mobile app, which is currently on the iPhone with later plans for Android, allows veterans to locate other veterans around them, communicate, and find resources in their local communities to help them in their transition out of the military.

?My goal is to fundamentally transform the veteran reintegration experience,? Allman says. ?I think the TAP [Transition Assistance Program] is flawed. The courses that you go through on a military base lack relevancy for where you actually go.?

Allman speaks from experience. After serving his last duty with the 4th Infantry Division, he was honorably discharged in 2003. ?When I got out, I didn?t know where a lot of the resources were in L.A.,? he says.

POS-REP, which is shorthand for the military term ?position report,? is being developed by Allman and a five-man team. It boasts a variety of features that can not only help veterans, but hosts some interesting technology. ?We?re really talking about innovation in the veterans reintegration experience,? Allman says.

The free download has a feature called Radar, which shows a map of other veterans around the area, and allows broadcasting of user locations based on your own privacy settings. Then there?s Sitrep, which Allman describes as a ?hyper-local version of Twitter,? allowing users to post status updates and communicate.

?What if Clay knew that people from his unit were within 5 to 10 miles? It could?ve changed his whole life. It could?ve changed everyone?s life,? Allman says. That idea is the basis for the Squads feature, which Allman illustrates as a way for military members to stay connected with their brothers and sisters in arms.?

?You?re leaving the service. Squad up with the people in your section or platoon,? Allman says. ?It?s the quickest way to maintain comms with the people you served with.? With two touches, a user can communicate with their entire squad, or initiate chat with an individual.

But Allman insists that the app isn?t only about communication. The long-term goal is to set veterans on a path to success. ?We can provide resources and push that information to you based on your location,? he says.

?You need to know the jobs in your area. You need to know the schools in your area,? Allman says. ?We turn TAP on its head. We make TAP hyper-local. I believe veteran reintegration is a local experience.?

POS-REP has more information available at their website.

China tightening controls on Internet

(AP) ? China's new communist leaders are increasing already tight controls on Internet use and electronic publishing following a spate of embarrassing online reports about official abuses.

The measures suggest China's new leader, Xi Jinping, and others who took power in November share their predecessors' anxiety about the Internet's potential to spread opposition to one-party rule and their insistence on controlling information despite promises of more economic reforms.

"They are still very paranoid about the potentially destabilizing effect of the Internet," said Willy Lam, a politics specialist at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. "They are on the point of losing a monopoly on information, but they still are very eager to control the dissemination of views."

This week, China's legislature took up a measure to require Internet users to register their real names, a move that would curtail the Web's status as a freewheeling forum to complain, often anonymously, about corruption and official abuses. The legislature scheduled a news conference Friday to discuss the measure, suggesting it was expected to be approved.

That comes amid reports Beijing might be disrupting use of software that allows Web surfers to see sites abroad that are blocked by its extensive Internet filters. At the same time, regulators have proposed rules that would bar foreign companies from distributing books, news, music and other material online in China.

Beijing promotes Internet use for business and education but bans material deemed subversive or obscene and blocks access to foreign websites run by human rights and Tibet activists and some news outlets. Controls were tightened after social media played a role in protests that brought down governments in Egypt and Tunisia.

In a reminder of the Web's role as a political forum, a group of 70 prominent Chinese scholars and lawyers circulated an online petition this week appealing for free speech, independent courts and for the ruling party to encourage private enterprise.

Xi and others on the party's ruling seven-member Standing Committee have tried to promote an image of themselves as men of the people who care about China's poor majority. They have promised to press ahead with market-oriented reforms and to support entrepreneurs but have given no sign of support for political reform.

Communist leaders who see the Internet as a source of economic growth and better-paid jobs were slow to enforce the same level of control they impose on movies, books and other media, apparently for fear of hurting fledgling entertainment, shopping and other online businesses.

Until recently, Web surfers could post comments online or on microblog services without leaving their names.

That gave ordinary Chinese a unique opportunity to express themselves to a public audience in a society where newspapers, television and other media are state-controlled. The most popular microblog services say they have more than 300 million users and some users have millions of followers reading their comments.

The Internet also has given the public an unusual opportunity to publicize accusations of official misconduct.

A local party official in China's southwest was fired in November after scenes from a videotape of him having sex with a young woman spread quickly on the Internet. Screenshots were uploaded by a former journalist in Beijing, Zhu Ruifeng, to his Hong Kong website, an online clearing house for corruption allegations.

Some industry analysts suggest allowing Web surfers in a controlled setting to vent helps communist leaders stay abreast of public sentiment in their fast-changing society. Still, microblog services and online bulletin boards are required to employ censors to enforce content restrictions. Researchers say they delete millions of postings a day.

The government says the latest Internet regulation before the National People's Congress is aimed at protecting Web surfers' personal information and cracking down on abuses such as junk e-mail. It would require users to report their real names to Internet service and telecom providers.

The main ruling party newspaper, People's Daily, has called in recent weeks for tighter Internet controls, saying rumors spread online have harmed the public. In one case, it said stories about a chemical plant explosion resulted in the deaths of four people in a car accident as they fled the area.

Proposed rules released this month by the General Administration of Press and Publications would bar Chinese-foreign joint ventures from publishing books, music, movies and other material online in China. Publishers would be required to locate their servers in China and have a Chinese citizen as their local legal representative.

That is in line with rules that already bar most foreign access to China's media market, but the decision to group the restrictions together and publicize them might indicate official attitudes are hardening.

That comes after the party was rattled by foreign news reports about official wealth and misconduct.

In June, Bloomberg News reported that Xi's extended family has amassed assets totaling $376 million, though it said none was traced to Xi. The government has blocked access to Bloomberg's website since then.

In October, The New York Times reported that Premier Wen Jiabao's relatives had amassed $2.7 billion since he rose to national office in 2002. Access to the Times' Chinese-language site has been blocked since then.

Previous efforts to tighten controls have struggled with technical challenges in a country with more than 500 million Internet users.

Microblog operators such as Sina Corp. and Tencent Ltd. were ordered in late 2011 to confirm users' names but have yet to finish the daunting task.

Web surfers can circumvent government filters by using virtual private networks ? software that encrypts Web traffic and is used by companies to transfer financial data and other sensitive information. But VPN users say disruptions that began in 2011 are increasing, suggesting Chinese regulators are trying to block encrypted traffic.

Curbs on access to foreign sites have prompted complaints by companies and Chinese scientists and other researchers.

In July, the American Chamber of Commerce in China said 74 percent of companies that responded to a survey said unstable Internet access "impedes their ability to do business."

Chinese leaders "realize there are detrimental impacts on business, especially foreign business, but they have counted the cost and think it is still worthwhile," said Lam. "There is no compromise about the political imperative of controlling the Internet."

Program helps veterans reintegrate through music

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (AP) ? During stressful times as a combat medic in Afghanistan, Mason Sullivan found solace in Vivaldi. New Jersey native Nairobi Cruz was comforted by country music, a genre she had never heard before joining the Army. For Jose Mercedes, it was an eclectic iPod mix that helped him cope with losing an arm during a tour of duty in Iraq.

These three young veterans all say music played a crucial role in alleviating the stresses of active duty. Now, all three are enrolled in a program that hopes to use music to ease their reintegration into civilian life.

"It's a therapy session without the 'sit down, lay down, and write notes,'" Mercedes, 26, of Union City, said of the music program. "It's different ? it's an alternative that's way better."

The pilot program, called Voices of Valor, has veterans work as a group to synthesize their experiences into musical lyrics. Guided by musicians and a psychology mentor, they write and record a song, and then hold a CD release party. The program is currently under way at Montclair State University, where students participate through the school's veteran affairs program.

Developed by husband and wife team Rena Fruchter and Brian Dallow, it is open to veterans of any age and background. No musical experience is required.

Both accomplished musicians, Fruchter and Dallow created the program as part of Music for All Seasons, an organization they founded which runs musical programs for audiences at places ranging from nursing homes to prisons.

Based on their experiences working with children at shelters for victims of domestic violence, Fruchter and Dallow realized that young people too traumatized to talk about what they had been through were nevertheless willing to bang on an instrument or sing ? often leading to communication breakthroughs. They felt the same might be true for veterans, or other populations traditionally averse to more overt forms of 'talk therapy.'

"We've had situations in which veterans have been carrying their burdens deep inside for such a long time, and they come into this group and they begin to talk about things that they've never talked about before," Fruchter said. "They really open up, and it translates into some music that is really amazing and incredible and powerful."

During a recent session of the eight-week program in Montclair, music facilitators Jennifer Lampert, a former Miss USO, and Julio Fernandez, a musician and member of the band Spyro Gyra, lead a small group of young veterans in brainstorming about their experiences.

"Tired of being angry," ''Easier not to move on," ''The war at home," were phrases Lampert extracted from a discussion among the participants and she wrote each phrase in marker on large notepads fastened to a classroom blackboard. As they spoke, Fernandez strummed an acoustic guitar while Lampert sang some of the phrases the students had come up with, adjusting the beat and tempo at their suggestion. Suddenly, a musical lyric emerged: "Sometimes, I wish the past is where I stayed."

A few weeks later, the group gathered at a sound studio in Union City, where they donned headphones and clearly relished the opportunity to record their collectively written tune, "Freedom," in a professional studio.

"To see music heal people in that way, it's beautiful, and the real incredible part is you don't have to do anything but give in to the music," Lampert said. She recounted how, time and again, the facilitators of the program had watched some participants start the class with shoulders slumped, hesitant to make eye contact, and afraid to speak up. Through the process of writing music they changed, she said, into group-focused, smiling, active participants unafraid to stand up and belt out a tune.

China Set To Surpass US In R&D Spending In 10 Years

The fact is, the wealth of the world is being redistributed, and the US and EU are coming up losers.

The wealth of the world being rebalanced so everyone has more equal wealth is a good thing, in my opinion. I'm not sure how it isn't, in any way at all.

Now, if you're saying that corporations are taking most of the money, and distributing the wealth unequally, that's a different issue, which is a result of our current system, which they've adopted to some degree.

More equal wealth will allow manufacturing and farming to actually exist in the west without subsidies, too. At the moment we're clinging on to high tech specialised manufacturing, but I doubt that will last for that long.

Will music resurrect Myspace?

As?Myspace reinvents itself, the social network aims to be nexus for bands and fans.

By Chris Gaylord,?Staff writer / December 24, 2012

The new Myspace revolves around music.

Myspace

In 2007, MySpace ruled social networking. The multibillion-dollar online empire had four times as many members as its chief rival, Facebook.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Yet by 2009, the site had nearly collapsed. My?Space crumbled under the weight of intrusive ads, dubious management, and an ascendant Facebook. Close to a million users abandoned the website each month for two years. After several rebranding attempts, even the "S" in the site's name shrank to a fraction of its former glory. Myspace was finished.

News Corp, which bought the site for $580 million, dumped it last year for $35 million.

The site's new owners have rebuilt My?space from scratch. Pop star Justin Timberlake and ad firm Specific Media scooped it up with plans to revitalize the social network while acknowledging that there's no use in fighting Facebook.

The new Myspace focuses the last?constituency?to stick with the social network: musicians.

"You've got places [other websites] where you can listen to an artist's songs, but not really where you can come together and discover them and enjoy all of their content and connect with them ? all in one place," says Jason Knapp, executive vice president of product for Myspace. "That hasn't really come back since it went away with the first Myspace."

Mr. Timberlake has used his industry connections to pull in major bands and rising acts, giving each a slick, graphics-heavy online home for their songs, music videos, concert dates, and fan outreach.

An editorial staff will point people toward new talent. Meanwhile, a series of computer algorithms churn behind the scene, trying to calculate specific recommendations for each user based on his or her Myspace activity.

As people discover new songs, they can listen to these tracks through Myspace's built-in music player. The free service will have the lar?gest music catalog on the Internet, according to Mr. Knapp, with all the songs that one would expect from Pandora and iTunes, plus every track uploaded to both the old and new Myspaces.

The social network is currently invitation-only, but will let in people in waves over the coming months. You can request early access at new.myspace.com.

Why do I do this? I teach creative nonfiction. More importantly, I teach critical thinking skills, which, if Wayne LaPierre is any example, are in short supply in this country. I insist that students read books about difficult topics precisely because I want students to understand how to pick apart a difficult argument and how to see through the eyes of someone else, or because I simply want to see if my students? vision of life squares up with those that they read. Sometimes, they are able to see themselves depicted in those pages, and sometimes they are able to examine their own prejudices (be they class, gender, race or education level) by being forced to look at the world through the eyes of the other.

I?m one of the NRA?s ?bad guys? ? Salon.com

I, too, teach critical thinking skills. It?s an uphill battle. My students having endured years of NCLB testing are superb factual test takers but have little experience with expressing an informed opinion. Quite often, a request for an opinion results not in an informed opinion based on any kind of fact or thinking but a reiteration of the worst elements of talk radio and 24 hours ?news.? Simple tests where opinions and facts are listed and the student asked to identify which is which are routinely failed even by good students.

Business ethics and business law both demand higher level thinking skills. Deciding what should be done when there are ethical questions can well depend on religious beliefs, philosophical perceptions, life experience and practical considerations all at once. Critical thinking is key to making intelligent business decisions both routine and ethical.

Critical thinking refers to a process of judgment taken after an analytical evaluation of a problem. It can be developed through the practice of intentional analyzing of every situation in life. Critical thinking skills can be developed by inculcating a habit of analytical and strategic thinking. If you can get yourself into the habit of analyzing every situation critically, you will gradually acquire critical thinking skills.

Your educational background plays a major role in the development of your thinking skills. Education that requires you to think analytically, the education that instills in you the principles of analytical thinking and reasoning leads you to become a critical thinker. The development of problem solving and reasoning skills since an early age is an excellent way of developing critical thinking skills. Fields that require you to acquire and evaluate information before reaching a conclusion indeed help in the development of critical thinking skills. Exposing yourself to questions that stimulate thinking can develop critical thinking skills.

From the web site, vive la internet -

No one always acts purely objectively and rationally. We connive for selfish interests. We gossip, boast, exaggerate, and equivocate. It is ?only human? to wish to validate our prior knowledge, to vindicate our prior decisions, or to sustain our earlier beliefs. In the process of satisfying our ego, however, we can often deny ourselves intellectual growth and opportunity. We may not always want to apply critical thinking skills, but we should have those skills available to be employed when needed.
Critical thinking includes a complex combination of skills. Among the main characteristics are the following:

Rationality
We are thinking critically when we
? rely on reason rather than emotion,
? require evidence, ignore no known evidence, and follow evidence where it leads, and
? are concerned more with finding the best explanation than being right analyzing apparent confusion and asking questions.

From the web site, Rliberni?s Blog, Radical Language -

How do we focus on the teaching of Critical Thinking skills in a standardized test focused curriculum?
What a fun topic for me this week (per usual for edchat). ?I actually almost missed it as I was running late from a meeting. ?Don?t tell my superintendent, but I may have pushed the speed limit a bit in a school vehicle to get to my computer. ?
As an administrator for the past 9 years, I have wrestled with this question often. ?I feel horrible about focusing so much on the test when I know that focusing on the test probably isn?t what is what our kids need for being better thinkers. ??

Many strong opinions were shared during this amazing fast paced hour of learning. ?It is hard to argue that critical thinking skills are vital to be taught and what we SHOULD be teaching. ?However, it is scary for teachers and administrators to deviate from not teaching to the tests when the system is currently set up with sanctions and penalties for those schools that do not do well on the tests. ?It was agreed by many, including me, that great teaching that includes teaching students how to think, rather than what to think, while ultimately produce strong results.?

Helpful Shape Up Health And Fitness Advice For A Fit Body | Fitness ...

December 22, 2012 ‐ Posted by Fitness Tips ‐ Under: Fitness Tips

Aerobic fitness training exercises can play a major role in helping you to lose weight. If you are not properly motivated to continue your fitness routine, you are more likely to give it up before it has the chance to begin working. Exercise can be interesting, fun, and something that you are drawn to. You need only look in the right places. There?s no rulebook that says you can?t have fun while working out. If you keep a positive attitude, you?ll find plenty of ways to keep your workouts entertaining. Use these ideas to improve your mindset and start on your path to success.

Play some of your favorite tunes while exercising. Dancing is a wonderful way to get up and get moving. Music makes exercise more enjoyable. Some people associate music with dancing, and music can trick the mind into thinking you are dancing, not exercising. You will not even notice how tired or sore your muscles are when you are enjoying yourself. Music can really boost your motivation to finish up those last few reps.

TIP! If you want pancake-flat, carved-up lower abs and a razor-sharp V-cut, consider The Lower Abs Trifecta your little secret weapon. Comprised of 3 different ab exercises back-to-back, it?ll absolutely demolish your lower abs and leave you sore for days.

Meet up with your friends to exercise. Working out is a great time to catch up on the latest news. Catching up on the latest gossip and chit-chat with a friend is a great way to distract yourself from the fact that you are exercising. Try having a good conversation to distract you. Having a workout buddy will boost your confidence and make working out fun.

You should incorporate workout video games into your exercise regimen. This will help turn your thoughts to playing the game and away from the exercises that you have to do. By directing your focus to the fun you are having, you will forget that you are actually working out, and you won?t get tired!

Invest in clothes that make you feel good about yourself. Well-fitting and attractive workout clothes are a great motivator. Workout apparel and gear come in every style, color, and pattern imaginable, so you can express yourself and have a unique fitness wardrobe. You can easily get creative when putting together an exercise outfit. Having workout gear that you are happy with will help you to get the motivation to exercise.

TIP! You want me to do something? tell me I can?t do it. -Maya Angelou

Repeating, repeating, repeating the same workout is boring, boring, boring. Shake things up. If you get bored, you will exercise less. You may lose faith entirely and stop your work out if you don?t have the right determination. This is why you should change up your routine regularly. Variety is important to keeping yourself interested in work outs. If you stop working out, you will risk losing all of the progress that you have already made.

Give your 100% to a fitness program, set a personal goal and get yourself a gift that you had been waiting on for a long time. This will help you keep focused on your weight loss plan. The rewards can be modest, like a new pair of shoes or a dessert you have been craving. Your reward has to be something that will assist you with motivation. If you don?t look forward to your reward, you may not keep following your fitness goal. It is imperative that you retain your motivation in your quest to lose weight.

YouTube Player API for Android opens for all, brings seamless app integration video

Adding a little dash of YouTube magic to your Android apps should be simple affair right? Well, historically, not entirely. That's all set to change though, now that the long-promised Android YouTube Player API has finally been set loose in the wild. This means developers can access some new tools that should bring the ubiquitous video service snuggly inside any app that wants to use it. This includes high-quality playback for devices running Android 2.2 and above, easier integration there-of due to a change in how to call the videos, full screen and orientation mode support, closed captions display, support for YouTube ads and the ability to program most elements of the playback experience natively within your app. The tools have already been put to use by some partners who got early access, including one of our favourite social feed-readers Flipboard. Full details and tools at the source, or slide past the break for Google developers video showing it in action.

Ofgem adds 2 billion pounds extra to grid bill

LONDON (Reuters) - British energy regulator Ofgem said it was allocating 24.4 billion pounds to fund the upgrading of the country's gas and electricity grid, adding 2 billion extra from initial plans announced in July.

Ofgem's proposals are part of plans to radically overhaul Britain's ageing energy infrastructure by 2020, as set out in its energy-security review Project Discovery.

Initial proposals made by the regulator, which has tried to curb energy company spending plans in order to provide value for the consumer, were slammed by the country's biggest energy distributor, National Grid, in July.

The company said in a separate statement on Monday that it would take time to review the updated proposals before deciding on whether they were acceptable or not.

Fast-rising consumer energy bills have caused anger in Britain among households squeezed by spiralling price rises and muted wage growth. A government advisory group said on Monday that a further 300,000 households risked 'fuel poverty' this winter.

Ofgem puts the cost of running and maintaining Britain's networks to 2021 at 38.2 billion pounds in total, meaning it has cut the total investment bill estimated by energy companies in their business plans by 16 percent.

"This provides a framework of strong incentives and penalties to stimulate the innovative and efficient operations of Britain's energy companies," Ofgem's chairman Lord Mogg said in a statement.

The regulator said its final plans earmarked up to 15.5 billion pounds to upgrade transmission networks for both gas and electricity, assets operated by National Grid.

Putin touts record Russian arms sales of $14 billion in 2012

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian arms exports reached a record $14 billion this year, President Vladimir Putin said on Monday, extending a run of record-breaking sales in recent years that have included deliveries to Syria despite the civil war raging there.

The world no. 2 arms exporter has cultivated new weapons clients in Southeast Asia and Africa, despite criticism that it is failing to deliver the technological benefits of Western suppliers or the low costs of emerging weapons exporter China.

"Let's talk about our results - they are positive. We are reaching a record level of weapons exports. Their total volume was above $14 billion," Putin said in a televised meeting with officials.

He said Russia had signed over $15 billion in new export contracts this year alone. He did not spell out when deliveries on those deals were expected.

Russia has faced Western criticism over its weapons sales to the Syrian government, worth nearly $1 billion in 2011.

Moscow says its arms deliveries to Syria, a longtime ally, do not violate international law and are not intended to help President Bashar al-Assad's government fight a 21-month-old uprising, but rather to fulfill Soviet-era commitments.

Russia has made clear it would use its U.N. Security Council Vote to veto an arms embargo against Damascus, contending such a move would be one-sided when rebels are able to obtain weapons via smuggling into territory they now control.

Moscow has reported no major arms deals with Syria this year. A major order of fighter jets was not completed, although it remains unclear as to why. Putin gave no specifics on Russia's main weapons buyers.

Top weapons clients also include Soviet-era client and regional Asian heavyweight India, as well as Vietnam and other Southeast Asian nations wary of China's growing military might.

Putin said a major part of Russia's weapons business includes upgrades and refurbishment of Soviet-era technology and hardware. "We understand that competition in this sector of the international economy is very high and very serious," he said.

Exports from the world's top producer, the United States, have hovered around $30 billion annually in recent years.

State arms exporter Rosoboronexport accounts for around 80 percent of all Russian arms sales in a given year and nearly 20 independent firms comprise the rest with sales of spare parts and upgrades.

YouTube launches Capture iOS app for smartphone shooting straight to the web video

You might want to file this under the "why didn't we have this in 2010" category, but Google just announced a new app that'll let you fire off that smartphone camcorder and boot your videos straight to the YouTubes Curiously, the appropriately named YouTube Capture app is only available for iPhone and iPod touch at the moment -- an Android version is set to launch "in the future" -- and it should be hitting the App Store sometime today. You can shoot video directly from within the new tool, then add a caption, select to send links to Google+, Facebook or Twitter, and hit Share to upload it directly to YouTube. You can also select from private, unlisted or public sharing options, depending on your intended audience. That's about it -- a very straightforward addition to Google's app portfolio. You can see it in action just past the break.

The Aereo legal battle: What's happening, and why it matters ...

Aereo Internet TV

Not yet tuned in to the legal battle between Aereo and the big TV networks? We're here to catch you up and explain why the outcome may be so important.

?No cable required.? That?s the battlecry that Internet startup, Aereo, foregrounds on its website. The company aims to offer live, uber-cheap, streaming Internet TV to users without a cable service provider. Not surprisingly, major networks pounced on the company earlier this year, with FOX, ABC, and several others filing a joint request for an injunction, alleging that Aereo?s service was in violation of copyright laws.

While the networks? initial request was shot down by U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan back in July, the plaintiffs promptly appealed, and the case is now proceeding in the Southern District Court of New York.

For a long time, the cable networks have been holed up with the door barred as the collective weight of the rest of the world looks to break up the racket of bundled, subscription-based cable. Thus far, their fortifications have held, but this case might prove to be the breakthrough that many have been waiting for. Aereo Founder and CEO Chaitanya?Kanojia believes it is. But even if Aereo isn?t the one delivering it, Kanojia seems confident that this technology won?t be held down. ?Migration to online TV is inevitable, unquestionably,? he told Digital Trends.?

Kanojia hopes to bring about that?inevitability through a technology that collects?channel feeds via a bevy of miniaturized antennae, and allows users to tap into the collected signal and watch live TV over the web. The networks are arguing that what Aereo is doing is a form of rebroadcasting, which copyright laws have clearly deemed to be illegal without the original broadcaster?s consent. But Aereo protests that they?re merely providing the means for users to pluck the signal out of the air.?

The networks had a similar beef with Cablevision?s DVR service when it first debuted and brought legal action, but it was determined that Cablevision wasn?t rebroadcasting, but rather giving users access to a server that recorded content was stored on. Not surprisingly, that case has already come up in the current court proceeding. While Aereo tried to raise it as a precedent, the networks maintained it wasn?t comparable scenario, since Cablevision had the proper licenses to broadcast the content in the first place ? ?licenses which Aereo does not have, and never sought.

Another possible precedent in this battle would be the Sony Corp. of America vs Universal City Studios, Inc. case (1984), in which ?the ruling stated that making copies of television programs via VCR for future viewing was protected under the fair use act.

Neither of these precedents is perfect for the occasion because ? in large part ? the occasion represents un-treaded territory. TV is evolving, and copyright laws haven?t really evolved with it. Though it might feel like Aereo is getting away with providing their service on a technicality, it?s a technicality that, short of changing the existing law, is difficult to subvert. Whether all of this passes the smell test or not, is immaterial.

This situation bears some similarity to file sharing. You?d have been hard pressed to find anyone who didn?t feel that it was tantamount to theft, but only after a long, attrition-filled legal battle, was the music industry able to curtail it in any meaningful way.

Despite the internet?s maturation into a ubiquitous, generation-defining entity, it still has bit of a wild west feel to it. Efforts to control it or legislate it have largely been convoluted and ineffectual. It?s a sector that seems to demand frontier justice, the administration of which is inhibited by a code of laws that is lagging conspicuously behind the technology it is meant to govern.

However you feel about the legality of what his company is doing, Kanojia certainly doesn?t come off as a crook. Quite the contrary. He comes off pragmatic and forthright; artifice doesn?t seem to be his game. He suggests that he?s merely taking the?temperature?of the times and acting accordingly, something he says TV networks have been reluctant to do. ?They [networks]?have a demonstrated an aversion to?any?new technology,? he argues.

No doubt we?re in for a long legal slog, but the fate of the pending injunction is a critical first step. If it?s shot down for a second time, what?s to stop dozens of other companies from doing exactly what Aereo is doing? The answer, uncomfortable as it may be, is nothing. Just as there was nothing to stop Kazaa or Limewire from following in Napster?s footsteps.

The law only provides you with so much protection out on the frontier, beyond which it?s essentially a dog-eat-dog world. Whether the networks can withstand this most recent siege remains to be seen. But however it turns out, it?s hard to imagine they can hold out for much longer.
