With the development of computer networks and multimedia communications, video conferencing is applied more widely, and it has good prospects for the development and research value. H.323 and SIP is currently the two major video conferencing standard based on IP network, taking into account the interoperability and compatibility with the original standard H.320, this paper chose the H.323 protocol based on IP network as a framework for the video conference system architecture.Based on the analysis and research of H.323, this paper provided the architecture of the video conference system, and analysed the key module. It presented the superiority of TMS320DM6446 which is a video conferencing terminal. It researched and implemented the far end camera control and MPEG-4 video transport in video conferencing.Video conferencing based on IP network transmits real-time images, audio and other data. If adding far end camera control in the video conference system, the various movements of the far end camera would be controlled arbitrarily, it will greatly improve the effectiveness of remote monitoring. So researching the far end camera Control is very important. Through research and comparative analysis of the various far end camera control protocol, this paper adopted the H.224/H.281 as far end camera control protocol of video conference system. Through analysis of H.224/H.281, it researched the methods of H.224/H.281 far end camera control in the video conference system, gived the existing problems when adding H.224/H.281 in the H.323 system and gived the solution, provided the design and realization of H.224/H.281 far end camera control, and verified that the H.224/H.281 far end camera control is correct through testing.Video conferencing adopted H.323 uses the video compression standards H.261 and H.263, the two standards exist low-coding efficiency, low efficiency of transmission, low quality of reconstruction image, and so on. MPEG-4 is the international video codec standard which has the superior performance, improves low bit-rate compression and increases fault-tolerant, and has better performance than ever standards (H.261 and H.263).So it is significant to research the transport of MPEG-4 video in video conferencing.Through the research of MPEG-4 video standard and MPEG-4 key technologies, including the DCT, quantization, motion estimation and motion compensation and VLC coding technology, this paper researched MPEG-4 video transport method in the video conference system, gived the existing problems when adding MPEG-4 video transport in the H.323 system and gived the solution, designed and implemented the transport of MPEG-4 video, provided the MPEG-4 video transmission model. And through the experiment on the two standard video sequences, it compared and analysed the results of the MPEG-4 video transmission and H.263 video transmission, the results had been satisfactory.

About 100 young people turned out yesterday for an Obama for America Colorado Youth Summit with actor and former White House staffer Kal Penn.
Penn, also known as Kumar from the ?Harold and Kumar? movies, was there to fire up the crowd before a morning of training exercises, telling the roomful of volunteers they will be critical to President Obama?s re-election effort ? just as they were in getting him elected four years ago.
?Your voice and your opportunity to reach out to your friends ? is something you can?t replace,? Penn said.
The summit was part of the wider Young Americans for Obama effort. But not every young person at the Denver office was supportive of the president.
Ellie Wallace, the Republican National Committee?s Colorado spokesperson, and two other supporters of presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney were waiting outside to greet Penn. They held signs that referenced Penn?s best known movie, ?Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle.? One read: ?Hey Kumar ? Under Obama, I owe equivalent of 12,941 double jalapeno cheeseburgers in student loans.?

Sunday?s sports pages from sea to shining sea not only included an Associated Press column regarding gambling on NFL games, but also contained an AP article on the future of youth football.? The item from Chris Jenkins provides an accurate snapshot of the practical consequences flowing from the combination of a generation of helicopter parenting and the advancement of medical knowledge regarding the long-term effects of mild brain trauma.
With or without the concussion lawsuits and the suicides of Dave Duerson and Junior Seau, mothers and fathers would continue to shy away from exposing young children to the more immediate risks of playing football.? If padded youth tackle football will survive over the long term (and, frankly, for kids under the age of 12 I?m not sure that it should), efforts must be made to ensure that coaches will be more responsible.
Plenty of the men who give their time to the coaching of youth football undoubtedly have good intentions and use appropriate methods, placing the well-being of their players over the ?win-at-all-costs? mentality that infects coaches at every stage of the sport.? But some coaches make youth football their own personal NFL, allowing an obsession with victory to cloud common sense and, at times, basic decency.
Forty years ago, youth coaches routinely denied their players water during practice, kicked them in the asses when they were loafing (I still have a cleat mark or two in mine), and corrected alignment errors by pulling them by the facemasks into the right position.? Though the days of football coaches laying hands on kids have long since ended (except for Mike Vanderjagt . . . allegedly), plenty of youth coaches still insist on a ruthless, aggressive approach from boys who should still be boys, in every way.
I?ve witnessed it.? Several years ago, Florio Jr. had soccer practice.? Nearby, a youth football team was padded up.? The coach was barking at kids no older than 10 like they were adults, cajoling them to be ?mean? and ?nasty? and to hit the other team so hard that when they cross paths at the mall during high school the opponents will still feel intimidated by it.
It?s shameful and it?s irresponsible and it needs to end, or youth tackle football eventually will.
And that?s where the NFL?s assumption that changes made at the top of the sport will trickle down could be erroneous.? Pro football coaches are accountable to the league office.? College football coaches answer to the NCAA.? At the high-school level and below, who?s really paying attention to what these coaches say and do?
That?s why it?s critical for efforts like the Lystedt Law to be successful in every state.? Without external bright-line rules regarding concussions, coaches who are largely left to their own devices will continue to be able to do things the way they?ve always been done, regardless of any advancements that are made to protect the grown men who play the game.
At every level below college, the challenge for football will be to adapt to the new expectations of society and parents and players, or to face the fact that players and parents and ultimately society will choose another path.? Though it won?t kill the sport completely, it will make it harder for colleges and NFL teams to identify and develop the best of the best available players.
Thus, every college team and every NFL franchise has a direct interest in finding ways to ensure that the stewards of the youth and high-school versions of the game behave responsibly, prudently, and properly when it comes to ensuring the health and safety of the boys and young men entrusted to them.

America's newest veterans are filing for disability benefits at a historic rate, claiming to be the most medically and mentally troubled generation of former troops the nation has ever seen.
A staggering 45 percent of the 1.6 million veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are now seeking compensation for injuries they say are service-related. That is more than double the estimate of 21 percent who filed such claims after the Gulf War in the early 1990s, top government officials told The Associated Press.
What's more, these new veterans are claiming eight to nine ailments on average, and the most recent ones over the last year are claiming 11 to 14. By comparison, Vietnam veterans are currently receiving compensation for fewer than four, on average, and those from World War II and Korea, just two.
It's unclear how much worse off these new veterans are than their predecessors. Many factors are driving the dramatic increase in claims ? the weak economy, more troops surviving wounds, and more awareness of problems such as concussions and PTSD. Almost one-third have been granted disability so far.
Government officials and some veterans' advocates say that veterans who might have been able to work with certain disabilities may be more inclined to seek benefits now because they lost jobs or can't find any. Aggressive outreach and advocacy efforts also have brought more veterans into the system, which must evaluate each claim to see if it is war-related. Payments range from $127 a month for a 10 percent disability to $2,769 for a full one.
As the nation commemorates the more than 6,400 troops who died in post-9/11 wars, the problems of those who survived also draw attention. These new veterans are seeking a level of help the government did not anticipate, and for which there is no special fund set aside to pay.
The Department of Veterans Affairs is mired in backlogged claims, but "our mission is to take care of whatever the population is," said Allison Hickey, the VA's undersecretary for benefits. "We want them to have what their entitlement is."
The 21 percent who filed claims in previous wars is Hickey's estimate of an average for Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield. The VA has details only on the current disability claims being paid to veterans of each war.
The AP spent three months reviewing records and talking with doctors, government officials and former troops to take stock of the new veterans. They are different in many ways from those who fought before them.
More are from the Reserves and National Guard ? 28 percent of those filing disability claims ? rather than career military. Reserves and National Guard made up a greater percentage of troops in these wars than they did in previous ones. About 31 percent of Guard/Reserve new veterans have filed claims compared to 56 percent of career military ones.
More of the new veterans are women, accounting for 12 percent of those who have sought care through the VA. Women also served in greater numbers in these wars than in the past. Some female veterans are claiming PTSD due to military sexual trauma ? a new challenge from a disability rating standpoint, Hickey said.
Don't miss these Health stories
Nearly 1,000 dogs reportedly have been sickened by chicken jerky pet treats from China, according to a new tally of complaints from worried owners submitted to federal veterinary health officials.
'Being kept alive at unprecedented rates'
The new veterans have different types of injuries than previous veterans did. That's partly because improvised bombs have been the main weapon and because body armor and improved battlefield care allowed many of them to survive wounds that in past wars proved fatal.
"They're being kept alive at unprecedented rates," said Dr. David Cifu, the VA's medical rehabilitation chief. More than 95 percent of troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan have survived.
Larry Bailey II is an example. After tripping a rooftop bomb in Afghanistan last June, the 26-year-old Marine remembers flying into the air, then fellow troops attending to him.
"I pretty much knew that my legs were gone. My left hand, from what I remember I still had three fingers on it," although they didn't seem right, Bailey said. "I looked a few times but then they told me to stop looking." Bailey, who is from Zion, Ill., north of Chicago, ended up a triple amputee and expects to get a hand transplant this summer.
He is still transitioning from active duty and is not yet a veteran. Just over half of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans eligible for VA care have used it so far.
Of those who have sought VA care:
?More than 1,600 of them lost a limb; many others lost fingers or toes.
?At least 156 are blind, and thousands of others have impaired vision.
?More than 177,000 have hearing loss, and more than 350,000 report tinnitus ? noise or ringing in the ears.
?Thousands are disfigured, as many as 200 of them so badly that they may need face transplants. One-quarter of battlefield injuries requiring evacuation included wounds to the face or jaw, one study found.
"The numbers are pretty staggering," said Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, a surgeon at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston who has done four face transplants on non-military patients and expects to start doing them soon on veterans.
400,000 new vets treated for mental health issues
Others have invisible wounds. More than 400,000 of these new veterans have been treated by the VA for a mental health problem, most commonly, PTSD.
Tens of thousands of veterans suffered traumatic brain injury, or TBI ? mostly mild concussions from bomb blasts ? and doctors don't know what's in store for them long-term. Cifu, of the VA, said that roughly 20 percent of active duty troops suffered concussions, but only one-third of them have symptoms lasting beyond a few months.
That's still a big number, and "it's very rare that someone has just a single concussion," said David Hovda, director of the UCLA Brain Injury Research Center. Suffering multiple concussions, or one soon after another, raises the risk of long-term problems. A brain injury also makes the brain more susceptible to PTSD, he said.
On a more mundane level, many new veterans have back, shoulder and knee problems, aggravated by carrying heavy packs and wearing the body armor that helped keep them alive. One recent study found that 19 percent required orthopedic surgery consultations and 4 percent needed surgery after returning from combat.
All of this adds up to more disability claims, which for years have been coming in faster than the government can handle them. The average wait to get a new one processed grows longer each month and is now about eight months ? time that a frustrated, injured veteran might spend with no income.
More than 560,000 veterans from all wars currently have claims that are backlogged ? older than 125 days.
The VA's benefits chief, Hickey, gave these reasons:
?Sheer volume. Disability claims from all veterans soared from 888,000 in 2008 to 1.3 million in 2011. Last year's included more than 230,000 new claims from Vietnam veterans and their survivors because of a change in what conditions can be considered related to Agent Orange exposure. Those complex, 50-year-old cases took more than a third of available staff, she said.
?High number of ailments per claim. When a veteran claims 11 to 14 problems, each one requires "due diligence" ? a medical evaluation and proof that it is service-related, Hickey said.
?A new mandate to handle the oldest cases first. Because these tend to be the most complex, they have monopolized staff and pushed up average processing time on new claims, she said.
?Outmoded systems. The VA is streamlining and going to electronic records, but for now, "We have 4.4 million case files sitting around 56 regional offices that we have to work with; that slows us down significantly," Hickey said.
Barry Jesinoski, executive director of Disabled American Veterans, called Hickey's efforts "commendable," but said: "The VA has a long way to go" to meet veterans' needs. Even before the surge in Agent Orange cases, VA officials "were already at a place that was unacceptable" on backlogged claims, he said.
Barbecues 'bottom of the list' for mothers of fallen troops on Memorial Day
He and VA officials agree that the economy is motivating some claims. His group helps veterans file them, and he said that sometimes when veterans come in, "We'll say, 'Is your back worse?' and they'll say, 'No, I just lost my job.'"
Jesinoski does believe these veterans have more mental problems, especially from multiple deployments.
"You just can't keep sending people into war five, six or seven times and expect that they're going to come home just fine," he said.
For taxpayers, the ordeal is just beginning. With any war, the cost of caring for veterans rises for several decades and peaks 30 to 40 years later, when diseases of aging are more common, said Harvard economist Linda Bilmes. She estimates the health care and disability costs of the recent wars at $600 billion to $900 billion.
The beauty in the details: Idaho's 'Field of Heroes'
"This is a huge number and there's no money set aside," she said. "Unless we take steps now into some kind of fund that will grow over time, it's very plausible many people will feel we can't afford these benefits we overpromised."
How would that play to these veterans, who all volunteered and now expect the government to keep its end of the bargain?
"The deal was, if you get wounded, we're going to supply this level of support," Bilmes said. Right now, "there's a lot of sympathy and a lot of people want to help. But memories are short and times change."

Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) just became the first private company to design, build, launch, and operate a spacecraft to approach the International space station. Before today, only governments did such things?and for a lot more money.? SpaceX had plenty of support from their experienced customer, but where it counts this mission was privatized, and game-changing.
Following its Tuesday morning launch into space aboard the Falcon 9 rocket, Dragon's pace was slow?and that makes sense. ISS is a wonder of the world, a feat of engineering that is irreplaceable for a slew of political and scientific reasons. Approaching the station with a bullet-shaped capsule means constantly checking to make sure the spacecraft is under complete control.
The plan had some wrinkles, and the capsule has some bugs. The biggest one seems to be the laser radar (LIDAR) sensors. These are used to help guide the capsule into its target. During Dragon's approach to the ISS, sunlight glinting off a Japanese laboratory was throwing off the LIDAR readings. SpaceX 's team uploaded commands that limited the LIDAR view so that these reflections were unseen. That worked just fine ... until, just before the station's crew operated the robotic arm to snatch the capsule, the flight director mentioned that one of the capsules two laser radars was not working. ?If the other fails it will mean an automatic abort,? she said.
The worry proved unfounded. Slowly, patiently, and silently, the robotic arm (build with pride by Canada) reached out the final 10 feet to grasp the SpaceX capsule. It took minutes for the end to slip into the appropriate port, securing the free-drifting capsule. ?Looks like we got a Dragon by its tail,? quipped Don Pettit, who was operating the arm.
The capture was confirmed; the job was done. The follow-up was routine space work?examining the capsule with binoculars for any foreign debris in the O ring that seals the capsule to the station, testing the air inside the capsule to make sure it was free of contaminants, and so on. But the centerpiece, the history part, is done.
Dragon will spend about two weeks at the ISS before detaching. The deorbit burn will last seven minutes and then the heat-seared capsule will splash down for recovery in the Pacific. It will be in a museum someday.
The future of private space is not certain. This mission is just a first step in what could be a new way to explore space. But companies like SpaceX are still facing pushback from Congress, who is leery over allowing private space companies to launch astronauts and wants to limit NASA's commercial space program to just one vendor. In satellite launches, private companies are competing against government-backed launch companies from across the globe. And, with any hardware, the reliability needs to be proven over time.
But it's hard not to admire how far private space company like SpaceX has come. The sun rises and sets every 45 minutes in space; emotional comments of new dawns come easy. Today, with the two spacecraft mated and circling overhead, the analogy seems appropriate.?

The Samsung Galaxy S III is still real hot news, and quite rightly so. As we approach the impending international launch -- starting May 29 in case you forgot -- the big release date questions are still coming from eager Android fans in the US.?According to a rumor posted by?TmoNews,??for T-Mobile at least, the wait might not be too much longer.?
Apparently, the Pebble Blue variant of the Galaxy S III, in both 16GB and 32GB form, will be available from June 20. The 16GB Ceramic White version will then follow on July 11. This follows on from the leaked June 20 graphics showing availability north of the border in Canada. (And this latest leak also pegs the Galaxy Note for July 11, so there's that.)
Big disclaimer though folks as usual, this is a huge old scoop of rumor. Nothing short of what we'd expect with such a massive launch as this one. But Samsung did show off an enormous "U.S. in June" slide at the London keynote, so there is a possibility of there being something behind this one.?

Homeowner loans, as the name implies, are loans that are granted by offering your home as a security for the loan. They are also called Home Equity loans or Secured Loans. A major plus point of using your house as collateral is that the amount of loan sanctioned is higher than personal loan. Personal loans are generally provided up to an amount of ? 25,000 according to loan rules followed in UK whereas Homeowner loans can go beyond this amount. The advance given depends on the value of the house and credit profile of applicant.
There is another advantage of this finance programme. A homeowner having bad credit history too can avail loan as the loan provider has the property as a security in case of default. Not only this, the interest rate is low as compared to other loans.
If a loan seeker has all the documents complete regarding his property, then the loan is approved within no time.
With a good amount of advance money in hand, a loan seeker is able to do lots of things.
If he wishes, he can modernize the entire house, build an additional floor or a bedroom. He can also use the amount for wedding of his or her daughter, take a trip around the world, consolidate his debts, or for that matter use it for a medical treatment.Depending on the amount of money taken as loan and the value of the property, repayment tenure can be from 2 to 15 years. In some cases it can extend up to 25 year. These terms are agreed upon while signing of the deal.
The coming of internet has eased a lot of problem of a prospective customer. Making a visit at loan provider?s office is absolutely not needed. He can compare the quotes and the credentials of the loan lending companies on net. This way he will be able to grab better deals and chances of approval are higher. He just has to fill in an online application form. Filling the form does not take much time and has some very simple questions on personal and bank details. As soon as the application is received by loan lending company, they authenticate the details and the amount is transferred in to client?s bank account.

Hazelnuts: New source of key fat for infant formula that's more like mother's milk
Thursday, May 24, 2012Scientists are reporting development of a healthy "designer fat" that, when added to infant formula, provides a key nutrient that premature babies need in high quantities, but isn't available in large enough amounts in their mothers' milk. The new nutrient, based on hazelnut oil, also could boost nutrition for babies who are bottle-fed for other reasons. The report appears in ACS' Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
Casimir Akoh and colleagues explain that human milk is the "gold standard" for designing infant formulas. Mothers naturally provide the healthful omega-3 fatty acid DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and omega-6 fatty acid ARA (arachidonic acid) ? important for brain development and the development of other organs ? to infants during the last three months of pregnancy. These fatty acids (components of fats) are also in human milk. But premature infants don't get full exposure to DHA and ARA in the uterus because they are born too soon. And their mothers' milk doesn't yet contain high enough levels when the infants are born. Some mothers, of course, do not nurse. That's why infant formulas include proteins, sugars and fats to bring them closer to the standard of human milk.
Currently, DHA and ARA (in the form of triacylglycerols) from algae are added to many formulas, but concerns exist about the digestibility of these algae-derived fatty acids, which are not exactly identical to those in human milk. So, Akoh's team set out to build a new designer fat from hazelnut oil that more closely mimics the DHA and ARA in human milk. The report describes development of fats from hazelnut oil that contain DHA and ARA at the same positions found on fats in human milk. The scientists extensively analyzed these human milk fat mimics and conclude that the new DHA and ARA source is suitable for the supplementation of infant formulas.

Once rare UK butterflies have been moving further north due to a pattern of hot summers, say researchers.
The brown argus, one of Britain's smallest butterflies, was limited to sun-loving shrubs on chalk grassland.
But since the 1990s the species has been expanding its range, using different plants to host their eggs.
Scientists from the University of York attribute this to rising summer temperatures.
Continue reading the main storyEnd Quote Rachel Pateman University of YorkWarm summers have benefited the brown argus butterfly by allowing it to become less picky?
Analysing records made by volunteers with the charity Butterfly Conservation, Rachel Pateman and colleagues at the University of York identified that populations of the butterfly have spread 79km (49 miles) further north in 20 years.
"The butterfly is now present throughout much of the south and east of England as far north as South and East Yorkshire," explained Ms Pateman whose study was published in the journal Science.
"This is unusual for species which are considered fairly scarce and specialised and so we were interested to discover what might have caused this rapid range expansion."
The amateur records held another clue for researchers as the butterflies seemed to have broadened their taste in host plants. In the past the insects only fed upon rockrose, now their tastes include Geraniums such as dove's-foot cranesbill.
"Warm summers have benefited the brown argus butterfly by allowing it to become less picky," Ms Pateman told BBC Nature.
"The Geranium species used are very widespread in the landscape and so this has enabled the rapid expansion of the butterfly."
Continue reading the main storyAccording to the scientists, rising summer temperatures are responsible for the warmth-loving butterflies' success.
Their investigation of climate data for the UK identified the link: summer temperatures from 1990 to 2009 were on average 0.78% warmer than previous summers, dating back to 1800.
"We think the brown argus was previously restricted to using rockrose because it grows in places with particularly warm microclimates and therefore was suitable when conditions were particularly cool," Ms Pateman said, explaining that the yellow-flowered shrub is typically found in "short turf on southerly-facing slopes."
"Geranium species, however, tend to grow in cooler places and so were unsuitable for brown argus when the climate was cooler," she said.
"As temperatures have increased we think the locations where Geranium species grow have now become warm enough for the brown argus."
Researchers focussed on the counties of Suffolk and Bedfordshire in their study, where recording the orange spotted wings of the brown butterflies is particularly popular.
"There has been an increase in recording over the years. However, when methods have been used to control for this, an increase in the distribution of brown argus is still found," said Ms Pateman.
"The records submitted by volunteers are an extremely valuable resource, without which the detection of long-term patterns like this would not be possible."

ScienceDaily (May 23, 2012) ? Long before babies understand the story of Goldilocks, they have more than mastered the fairy tale heroine's method of decision-making. Infants ignore information that is too simple or too complex, focusing instead on situations that are "just right," according to a new study to be published in the journal PLoS ONE on May 23.
Dubbed the "Goldilocks effect" by the University of Rochester team that discovered it, the attention pattern sheds light on how babies learn to make sense of a world full of complex sights, sounds, and movements. The findings could have broad implications for human learning at all ages and could lead to tools for earlier diagnosis of attention-related disabilities such as ADHD or autism, says Celeste Kidd, lead author on the paper and a doctoral candidate in brain and cognitive sciences at the University.
With the aid of eye-tracking devices and statistical modeling, the research is the first to provide both a theory and quantifiable measures of what keeps a baby's attention, says coauthor Richard Aslin, the William R. Kenan Professor of brain and cognitive sciences at the University.
For years, researchers have explored what types of events most effectively capture babies' attention. In some situations, infants reliably prefer familiar items, such as a favorite toy; in others, they favor novel objects. The new study resolves such seeming contradictions. Instead of novelty or familiarity per se, the research shows that babies seek out situations with just the right amount of surprise or complexity.
To measure complexity, the Rochester team developed a test based on the probability of surprising events in a video. Unlike hard-to-quantify concepts such as novelty or unlimited dimensions such as size, probability exists in a well-defined range from 0 (never happens) to 1 (always happens). Probability provides a continuous measure and is often employed by computer scientists and engineers to describe complexity, says Aslin.
In the study, researchers measured the attention patterns of 72 seven- and eight-month-old infants in two separate experiments. The babies watched video animations of fun items, such as a pacifier or ball, being revealed from behind a set of colorful boxes. The researchers varied where and when the objects would appear across dozens of short trials.
measure attention, an eye-tracking device located below the computer screen followed the infants' gaze. As long as they looked at the screen, the events continued; as soon as they looked away, the trial ended. Babies quickly learned that they were in control. If they wanted to continue watching they just needed to keep their eyes on the screen. To reduce distractions, infants sat in a darkened space on the lap of their parent, who wore headphones playing music and a visor to prevent them from biasing their infant's performance.
Using a specialized statistical model, the researchers were able to calculate and predict how likely infants were to lose interest based on the complexity of each event depicted in the video. Complexity was defined as how surprising each event was in light of the previous events an infant had observed in the video.
Across both experiments, babies reliably lost interest when the video became too predictable -- when the probability of a subsequent event was very high. "But here's the counterintuitive part," says Aslin. "You would think that the more complex something is, the more interesting it would be. That's not the case with babies." They drifted away from the screen when the sequence of events also became too surprising -- when the pattern seemed random and unpredictable because the probability of something happening was very low.
"The study suggests that babies are not only attracted by what is happening, but they are able to predict what happens next based on what they have already observed," says Kidd. "They are not passive sponges. They are active information seekers looking for the best information they can find."
Although the experiments were limited to infants, the results provide a window into the way the brain works in general. "If you are interested in human nature, then babies are the place to look," because their reactions are less complicated by cultural filters and learned responses, says Steven Piantadosi, a coauthor and post-doctoral fellow in brain and cognitive sciences.
For example, the "Goldilocks" attention pattern supports other theories of adult learning, the authors note. Cognitive scientists have proposed that learners direct their attention to material that contains just the right amount of challenge, because this optimal complexity triggers the right amount of stimulation in learners.
In real life, babies are also attracted to faces, voices, foods, and other aspects of their world that are key to survival. These "special" stimuli may trigger attention in a different way, the authors acknowledge. But complexity does help to explain how infants gather information about the rest of their environment, they write.
Does this mean that parents should worry about providing material that is "just right" for their little ones? Not really, says Aslin. "Infants are learning all the time, as long as they have reasonably stimulating environments. They focus in on what they can handle and filter out the rest," he says.
Kidd agrees: "Parents don't need to buy fancy toys to help their children learn. They make the best use of their environment. They are going to look around for what fits their attention level." And even though the experiment employed an animated video, the scientists emphasize that human interactions are the most critical for development. "Kids learn best from social interaction," reminds Kidd.
The study's insights into attention patterns may help to explain why children ask to hear the same story over and over. For an adult, the repetition can be mind numbing, says Kidd, "but for a child, they are likely getting something new out of the story every time. Because adults know so much, we often take for granted how many new things an infant needs to learn."
The research was funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health and the J. S. McDonnell Foundation.

Reviving an old section today ? Monday morning spice ? some photos to cheer you up on a dreary Monday morning. And thought, what better way to bring back a section which has ?spice? in it?s name than to talk about food! And that too food in Italy!
With absolutely no doubt about it, the top rank goes to? Pizza!!
You thought Italy was famous for it?s pizza? You?re right, but within Italy, Napoli is especially famous for it. And it?s not the typical pizza you?d fine which is baked in electric oven and has a hundred different type of toppings. The ?real? Italian pizza is cooked in smouldering embers of a clay oven. There are two main types ? Margherita and Marinara (or, to be precise,?pizza napoletana margherita and pizza napoletana marinara). These are very basic, very tasty and quite inexpensive (just 3-5 Euros for a full-size pizza). You can get ones with different type of toppings added to them, but they don?t really need any toppings. If you really want to mix it up a bit, get the margherita with double mozzarella ? it?s yummy!
Travel tip: Only go for a pizzerie which has a sign outside which says ?Vera? pizza ? this indicates it will present to you authentic clay-oven baked pizzas.
p.s. The pizzas in Napoli were so tasty, I don?t have a single photograph of them ? I gobbled them up so fast!
Continuing with the pizza theme, Neapolitans love cheese. Here?s a dish called ?Braciola al ra gu? which is essentially meat with cheese stuffed inside it. Luxury.
And to cap it all off, I also tried Risotto. This was at the unfortunately pricey restaurant called Locanda del Grifo (although pizzas were quiet cheap at just ?4). This is?Risotto fiori di Zucca, which was nice and tasty. Not mindblowing though.
Italian food. I miss it. I am feeling very hungry now. I better go get a full English breakfast!
