Health and safety standards for any type of work are very important requirements in fulfilling work regulations. Just like any other profession, electricians must strictly observe electricity work regulations. They should take precautionary measures to ensure minimal risks of death or personal injury arising from electricity work activity. This article outlines some of the work requirements needed for safe working.
The first step is for the electrician to ensure that all permanent installations are done in accordance with the Institute of Electrical Engineers regulations. All electrical installations must be inspected and tested before commissioning and made available for use. In addition all electrical installations must be regularly inspected, tested and maintained by a qualified electrician who will keep thorough records throughout the life of maintenance. The condition of most electrical appliances must be checked on a rota call basis system. During maintenance, it is advisable not to carry any work on live cables unless it is basically unavoidable to do so. In this case, necessary precaution must be taken to ensure safety of all people who may be present. Safety precaution should be exercised to ensure that the public is not exposed to electricity. In addition, when working on a machine with moving parts, ensure that the machine is very stable and adequately guarded and safe. Machine guards should not be used when the machine is in operation. Electrical installation of permanent machines should be done is such a way that all supply cables are not position in a manner that can cause electrical hazards. Portable appliances especially should be fitted with enough power supply cable to avoid stretching the cable when in use. All portable tools and appliances must be earthed in accordance to manufacturers' instructions.
An electrician who cannot work safely at the ground level should ensure that a safe working platform has been erected. If ladders are used, they should be tied securely at the base to ensure that they do not slip.
Ensure warning signs are erected at places of work, on machines and all circuits under repair. In case of an accident, it should be reported immediately together with a report of all details of the accident. Speed is of essence when dealing with an accident, the electrician must be familiar with the sequence of steps to be taken in an emergency. First the electrician should alert other people for assistance and in case of normal voltage, switch off the power or if this is not possible, release the victim from contact with live wires. This should be done using dry clothing, gloves, rubber, or any other insulating material available. In case of high voltages, the lines should be de-energized immediately because there might be no proper insulation material to help release the victim from the live conductors. After isolation the electrician should start artificial respiration and continue until medical aid arrives.
It is always wise to prevent an accident and all electricians must always follow safe working procedures and have basic knowledge and course in cardiopulmonary resuscitation so that they are able to be helpful in case of emergencies.
