Firefox 15 to arrive in finished form on August 29th, promises truly stealthy updates for all (update: it's out early)

Firefox 15 to arrive in complete form on August 29th, promises truly stealthy updates for all Mozilla has been keeping to a tight schedule of having a completed Firefox release every five to six weeks, and it's very much on track. The browser team's Ehsan Akhgari has confirmed that a properly polished version of Firefox 15 should reach the download servers on August 29th. When it does arrive, the new release will primarily expand the silent updates that Windows users first saw in Firefox 12: future iterations on all platforms will install themselves in the background and should be truly ready to go the next time the browser starts. Beyond this deliberately subtle change, the finished version 15 upgrade should still support Opus audio as well as clamp down on out-of-control memory use from add-ons. We're looking forward to not noticing the differences very shortly.

Update: Although it's not on the front page yet, both Mozilla, reader Josh and this writer can confirm that Firefox 15 is rolling out sooner than expected -- there's no reason to wait.

Graphic D-Signs, Inc. - Small Business Advertising Agency? - NJ ...

By Danielle Avenoso / Senior Brand Strategist & Account Manager,?NJ Marketing Agency?Graphic D-Signs, Inc.

Are you a small business owner trying to accelerate company growth? If so, here are nine principles you should know about marketing to ensure greater success and drive ROI.? ?

1.???? Empower yourself with knowledge. While it takes time out of your schedule, it?s important to conduct research on your industry, market, direct competitors and consumers. You can never know too much?and you can certainly know too little. Just as athletes prepare for the big game, marketing success requires countless hours of practice. ?

2.???? Know your budget. Identify the investment you want to allocate to your marketing. A good estimate is roughly five percent of your sales. It is critical to establish a budget, because this will allow you to properly and effectively plan your marketing.

3.???? Create an identity. As a company, your brand is one of your greatest assets. It communicates and connects with audiences, and creates passion for your business. Think of your brand as a spokesperson for your company: highlighting your promises and propositions to the consumer. 4.???? Formulate a plan of attack. Too many times, small business owners react instead of thinking about business implications, competitors and consumers. It is more fruitful to formulate a plan of attack, first. What media channels will you leverage to connect with your consumer? If you plan, your strategy will be more effective and your budget will remain efficiently intact. 5.???? Strategy is king. What is the message you want to convey in all marketing components? What service or value do you provide that sets you apart from the competition? This single-minded idea should live throughout all advertising deliverables for an in-sync marketing message. 6.??? Execute your strategy. How will you put your strategy to work? Print? Website? Online banners? Coupons and promotions? Radio? TV? Identify your deliverables and tools of attack.? 8.???? Track. Measure. Record. Accountability is key, so remember to monitor and gauge the effectiveness of your budget and advertising campaign. By tracking leads via different media channels, you can identify those channels that give you the best ROI versus channels that need to be further optimized.

9.???? Improvise! By utilizing what you?ve learned from data tracking, you can change-as-you-go. Proper measurement helps you discover how to better spend your budget, which channels to remove from the media plan, and which channels to try in the future.

Civic Club of Harrisburg looks to reboot for modern times | PennLive ...

In its prime, the Tudor home on Front Street was a hub for the who?s-who of Harrisburg. The hallways and gardens would fill with the wives of influential Harrisburgers, gathered for tea and discussions regarding the issues of the day.

Named the Civic Club of Harrisburg, the ladies? impact on the city was deep and wide as they lobbied for social concerns.

Members of the women-only club paid for Harrisburg?s first free kindergarten, were instrumental in the establishment of a garbage collection system for the city and became champions of the ?City Beautiful? movement in the early 1900s.

The club took on environmental issues that affected residents? health, advocating for clean air and water and at one time, placed a bounty on flies. In 1914, members paid 5 cents per pint of flies, collecting more than 500.

Today the home, with its carefully tended garden and beautiful ballroom, is better known as ?the wedding place on Front Street.? A venue for brides and grooms to dance the night away above the banks of the wide Susquehanna River where Front and North streets meet.

Like many century-old organizations, the club has been challenged to adopt to the modern world. At its peak, club membership included more than 700 women.

Times have changed.

As more and more women entered the workplace ? and more things competed for people?s attention ? club membership began to fall off.

Now, more than 114 years after it began working in the city, the club is rebooting.

Members spent the better part of a year working on a strategic plan for the club, aimed at figuring out its future.

A few weeks ago, in the ballroom on the second floor of the mansion, the heads of several nonprofit organizations were sipping coffee and munching on breakfast. They talked about what their organizations are doing in the Harrisburg region and their plans for the rest of the year.

Habitat for Humanity is close to opening three new homes, they heard. Dress for Success is planning to start a mobile store for women in need of professional clothing. The arts program Barak is planning to launch an arts festival for young people.

The nonprofit breakfast get-together is one of the new initiatives being hosted by the Civic Club. President Beth Cornell is hoping it will become a way for the agencies to not only network, but identify community issues to tackle together.

Business have the Chamber of Commerce, Cornell said, ?but what about non-profits??

?Where do they meet, where do they talk?? she asked. ?We want to be outside facilitators.?

Hence the roundtable discussion a few weeks ago.

Other subtle changes are also taking place in the club. The old house is now wired ? both figuratively and literally, with a website and Internet access. There?s a new motto and logo.

But one of the most interesting initiatives is that the club has started broadcasting.

Each month the ladies host a speaker on a topic relevant to the community.

One month may be a speaker discussing Chesapeake Bay conservation and its impact on communities along the Susquehanna. Or a seminar on senior citizen crime prevention.

In the past, members and visitors would have to physically be present to hear the discussions. But this year the club piloted a program where they began broadcasting the sessions to the nearby Homeland Center.

They?re pursing a grant to allow them to continue to do so, and are working with other organizations in the area to increase their audience.

Then there is the building itself. Upkeep of the historic structure is expensive, but necessary. The club sees itself as a public space ? how can they capitalize on that?

Club officers are talking with the League of Women Voters to host political debates in the fall. Nonprofits can use the historic home for events.

?We?re still doing weddings, we?re still doing events, but we want to expand a little bit beyond that,? Cornell said.

This summer the club is holding a membership drive for women in the local community. More members means more hands to work on projects in the community.

?We have to think about our society today,? Cornell said. ?This place used to be where women would to find out what the issues are. What then is the role of our club? That?s what we want to tackle.

?I didn?t really want us to be known as ?the wedding club,?? Cornell said. ?I want us to be known as ?the Civic Club.??

Chorizo Tomato Pasta for Back to School #SundaySupper ...

Pasta with Chorizo and Cherry Tomatoes in a Creamy Sauce

For my second time participating in the Sunday Supper??movement the theme is Back to School 30 minute start to finish dinner meals. Though as summer comes to an end I am no longer going to back to school (and instead am embarking on a 2 year backpacking trip around the world) I do still appreciate the value of easy and quick to make meals.

So this week I am sharing a recipe for a chorizo tomato pasta dish. I probably couldn?t even tell you what chorizo was before I studied abroad in Madrid in 2009 but since then my love for this pork product has bloomed into a wonderful affair.

Chorizo is a Spanish sausage made with pork, pork fat, dried smoked red peppers and salt. Usually smoked this sausage can be sliced as is ready to eat but it can also be found raw in which you can cook it the way you would sweet/hot italian sausages.

I personally prefer the cured chorizo which I usually quarter and thinly sliced and sautee lightly, until just slightly browned and crispy.

Spiritual Sundays: How Do We Become Like Salt? | The Power of ...

Image by Carlos Porto / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Editor?s Note: The Power of Moms is a website for mothers of all religions (and for mothers who are not necessarily religious). Each Sunday, we post a spiritual essay, and we would love to gather a wide variety of perspectives and ideas. ?Our goal is to be respectful of all beliefs while simultaneously offering opportunities to share meaningful, spiritual thoughts with one another.

?

Matthew 5:13?(From the New Testament)

?Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted?? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.?

Salt isn?t very tasty all by itself.? You?d never say, ?Wow, that salt tastes incredible!?? However, when the salt is MISSING, you definitely notice.? Have you ever eaten a salt-less piece of bread?? One time I made barbecue chicken pizza calzones for a friend of mine who?d had a rough week.? After I dropped it off (and she oohed and ahhed over how great they looked), I realized that I had forgotten the salt.? My heart sank, and I called her on the phone and said, ?Don?t eat it.? I forgot the salt!? I?m so, so sorry.? It?s going to taste horrible.?? She was very nice about it and said that was just fine, but I knew that leaving out just one teaspoon of salt had made the dinner pretty much inedible.? And it?s not the same if you just sprinkle salt on top.? It needs to be baked INTO the bread.

In many ways, the role of salt compares to the roles of mothers.? Mothers aren?t mothers by themselves.? They need someone TO mother.? Have you ever heard the saying, ?I?d be a great wife and mother if it weren?t for my husband and children.?? That statement will elicit some laughs, but we all know that we need a family in order to have the full experience of motherhood.? Likewise, our families need us.? They might not notice how often we step in and influence their lives, but when a mother is missing, there is a definite void in the home.? And you can?t just ?sprinkle??your mothering on?at the end?rattling off a bunch of?random instructions and statements of adoration.? Your mothering needs to be ?baked in? to your child through?countless quality interactions.

Another reason salt reminds me of mothers is because salt doesn?t call attention to itself, but it makes everything around it taste better.? Mothers are queens behind the scenes.? We do a lot of work that no one will ever notice, and we don?t ask for praise and attention, but because of our efforts, our families feel more loved, more secure, more important.? My job isn?t to become a superstar to the world.? My job is to be a light to support my family, so we can all receive the brightness of the Son.

Salt is essential.? It is in your blood, your sweat, and your tears.? No food storage supply is complete without several pounds of salt because we simply cannot survive without it.? Without mothers, the human race would not survive.? Bearing and rearing our children isn?t just something we do for fun.? It is absolutely essential to the continuation and health of the planet.

I like to think of my work as a wife and mother as sprinkling salt.? Sometimes I?ll do my daughter?s hair extra special for her awards ceremony (sprinkle, sprinkle), I?ll draw a heart on my husband?s lunch bag (sprinkle, sprinkle), or I?ll give my baby a little massage with scented lotion (sprinkle, sprinkle).? Then there are ?dashes? of hugs after family prayer, of nice, clean laundry folded with love, of homemade pizza everyone adores?.? These are the special things I contribute to my family.

All who are doing the will of the Lord are the salt of the earth, and to keep our savour, we need to stay close to Him.? He has the power to make our influence exactly what it needs to be?.not too much, not too little, but just right.

QUESTION:? What have you done to be a more ?salty? Mom?

CHALLENGE:? Do a little ?sprinkling? and ?dashing? today to add savor to your mothering.

Irene's biggest mystery: Where is Marble Arvidson? - KansasCity.com

It hadn't yet begun raining when a teenager named Marble Arvidson pinned a note to the door of his bedroom in a foster home, saying he'd be back in half an hour.

By the time he was reported missing the next day, police officers were overwhelmed by the deluge wrought by the remnants of Hurricane Irene, the state's worst natural disaster in generations. And so, a year after that last Saturday in August, the friendly but guarded 17-year-old with long blond hair, a lanky build, an unpredictable temper and a penchant for black clothing remains missing in what may become Irene's most enduring mystery."I want to assume he just chose to leave and he's just somewhere else," said Dan Nichols, 18, a friend from the streets of Brattleboro. "He's most likely gone far, because lots of towns around here know about the situation. There are missing persons posters everywhere."Did he get high at a favorite hangout, slip on a rock, get washed away in a raging stream? Did he commit suicide? Was he abducted and killed? Or did the near-adult cleverly decide the coming storm was a golden opportunity to slip out of his hardscrabble life and quietly build a new one?Authorities and those closest to him simply don't know. They're left only with what little they know about a visitor to his door before he disappeared and the details of the life that led him to the red clapboard house at state Route 9 and Sunset Lake Road.---Marble's extended family is from western Massachusetts, but he was born in California. His mother, Sigrid Arvidson, thought the name would be whimsical and attention-getting."It's got that ring to it; it's a strong name and stuff," she said. "I loved marbles."She and the boy moved back to Massachusetts when he was 1; she was escaping an abusive relationship and struggling with alcoholism.Marble's great-grandparents raised him until he was 5 or 6; then he began spending time with his sober mother, eventually living with her again full-time. In 2001, she moved to a house in the country in Halifax, Vt., where she also found better schooling for Marble. In early adolescence, the boy began working with a male mentor, meant to provide a role model he didn't have. That lasted until he was 14, when an adolescent power struggle about cleaning his room and other restrictions on the life of the growing teenager erupted into violence. He took a splitting maul to the outside of the house, smashing the porch and parts of the foundation, causing about $3,000 in damage, his mother said.Marble then went into traditional foster care. His third and final placement was the red house in West Brattleboro, a neighborhood in a town of about 7,500 in southeastern Vermont known for its hippie culture and left-wing politics.Still in the custody of the Vermont Department of Children and Families, Marble lived with a mentor - a legal guardian in his 20s - along with another teenager and that teen's mentor. He would hang out by the regional transportation center, situated near a stream called the Whetstone Brook. When last seen, he was about to enter his last year at Brattleboro Union High School, where he was making Bs and thinking about college."He did struggle with his emotions, he did struggle with his frustration and anger, and sometimes he needed outside help beyond what a family member or a mentor could give him, but I do believe those options were available to him and they were utilized," said his aunt Patricia Kittredge, of Belchertown, Mass., one of the top noncommissioned officers in the Massachusetts National Guard. On Aug. 27, a Saturday, Irene was churning up the coast of the Carolinas on its way to New York City and New England.Marble pinned a note to his bedroom door around 2 in the afternoon, saying he was "going to frolic with some friendly gremlins," and left the house with a man who appeared to be in his mid-20s, someone he knew, who might have been wearing a black baseball cap, two of his roommates later remembered. An hour or so after Marble left, his girlfriend came looking for him, but he wasn't there. At first, people thought he was with friends.Later that afternoon, it started to rain. The next day, Sunday, Vermont was dealing with a deluge that dropped more than 7 inches of rain onto the Green Mountains, upstream from Brattleboro."I think like many parents and people, you get a little nervous and you go, 'You know, he's probably over at a friend's house,'" Kittredge said. "Do I think that they probably should have taken it more seriously Saturday night? Yes, but I can understand why they didn't."On Sunday, lots of calls were made to lots of his friends."'Hey, he still didn't come home. We can't find him,'" Kittredge said. "And this is in the middle of, we have no streets, we can't get anywhere, communication is down and everybody is overwhelmed."Police say Marble was reported missing by his foster parent on Sunday. The first thing police did was alert other agencies Marble was missing, Brattleboro Police Chief Eugene Wrinn said. Officers met with the foster parent and others, but police were dealing with Irene, a tropical storm by the time it swept over Vermont."I think we put the efforts that we could and the resources that we could," Wrinn said.Whole towns were isolated for days because of washed-out roads and bridges. Six people died, and damage was pegged at three-quarters of a billion dollars in a state with a total budget of about $5 billion. In Brattleboro, it was months before many downtown businesses reopened. The house where Marble lived stayed on dry ground, but its direct route to town was cut for three days by the Whetstone Brook and another stream, which turned hay fields into raging torrents and inundated a mobile home park.Kittredge, his mother, his girlfriend and others held news conferences asking for his return or for information, pleas that were later posted on YouTube. There's a website and a Facebook page. Fliers are posted throughout the region. A $2,500 reward is still untouched. And police still haven't learned who knocked on the door."My sense is that whatever he went to do turned into something else, and he wasn't prepared for it," said his mother, who just moved to Lyons, Colo., with Marble's 15-year-old brother Soren to, as she put it, "give us a chance to heal."Marble didn't take anything with him when he left. His bank account remains untouched. There are no electronic tendrils that could be used to track him. Extensive ground searches by people and dogs have turned up nothing."He admitted he smoked marijuana; is it possible that he went outside slipped and fell, hit his head and knocked himself unconscious and got washed away by the storm? Yeah, it's possible," Kittredge said. "Is it possible that he went outside to go for a walk and somebody stopped to pick him up and he thought it was a good idea and whoever it was, was a crazy person who abducted him? It's just odd that there is no trace."Did he commit suicide, his remains washed away? Maybe, Kittredge said, but no one saw any warning signs. There are darker, barely whispered rumors that Marble was feuding with people around town or that perhaps his marijuana use played a role in his disappearance. Wrinn, the police chief, said investigators have heard the talk. The detective who first led the search for Marble has left the department. Wrinn said he has assigned two detectives to start from scratch. He's still hopeful Marble will be found alive.Nichols, the friend, said he met Marble in school and they became friends."He was a real smart kid, always got good grades," he said. Belying his largely black wardrobe, he'd eagerly talk to almost anyone but never get too personal.Nichols last saw Marble a couple of days before he disappeared. Like everyone else, he has heard rumors but doesn't know what happened to him."I don't think he wanted anyone to think that he was dead or injured," Nichols said. "He had people who cared about him, and he cared about people, too."Marble's aunt and mother hope focusing attention on the case will prompt someone to come forward with information."His 18th birthday would have been June 14," Kittredge said. "There was this little part of me that went, if he had the ability and the audacity to go hide out until he turned 18, I would have hoped he would have turned up by now."I believe he is out there somewhere for sure. I don't necessarily have a strong feeling he is out there alive. I think it is possible, but I think it is remote."

East African Breweries targets costs, earnings jump

NAIROBI (Reuters) - East African Breweries Ltd (EABL) will focus on cutting costs this year by growing raw materials locally and moving production of some brands to the markets where they are sold, its chief executive said on Friday.

Soaring costs of sales are spoiling the party for the Diageo-controlled brewer, which has a commanding lead in one of the world's fastest growing alcohol markets, out-selling rivals in both beer and spirits.

EABL, which makes Tusker beer and sells Johnnie Walker whisky, said costs rose 26 percent during its full year ended June, outpacing a 24 percent jump in revenue to 55.5 billion shillings.

Chief Executive Devlin Hainsworth said the company was already growing sorghum in Tanzania to cut raw material costs, adding that the programme will be rolled out further, along with decentralisation of brewing from Kenya.

"We need to be crystal clear what we are making where and therefore, what opportunities are there to be able to save some of the transportation costs so it (cost-cutting) is very much in focus," Hainsworth told reporters.

The company has already started manufacturing brands like Tusker in Tanzania, which was previously served by its brewery in Nairobi. EABL sells its products in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The markets were buoyant with Uganda and Tanzania recording growth of 38 percent and 76 percent, respectively, while the Great Lakes markets of Rwanda, Burundi and eastern Congo grew by 30 percent.

Pretax profit rose 24 percent to 15.25 billion shillings and the company maintained its dividend for the year at 8.75 shillings per share, meaning a dividend yield of 4 percent against a market average of 5-7 percent.

TAKING ON ILLICIT AND HOME BREWS

Analysts said the dividend payout by EABL was still acceptable, citing increased leveraging by the company and the jump in cost of sales. Its finance costs more than doubled to 4.56 billion shillings.

"It will take a bit of time to really get that item (costs) under control," said Eric Musau, an analyst at Standard Investment Bank.

Shares of EABL edged down by just less than 1 percent to 228 shillings each after the results were issued.

Hainsworth said he expected earnings to grow further as the company targets customers who currently buy alcohol from the illicit and home brews market, which is estimated to be the same size as the established beer market.

Global brewers like Heineken and SABMiller have been paying closer attention to Africa, where booming economies are spawning new consumers, to shore up flagging sales in economically troubled markets like Europe.

"One of the biggest things we are seeing across the region is 'premiumisation'. People coming from illicit brews into brands like Senator Keg," Hainsworth said, referring to EABL's low-end brand, which is dispensed from kegs in bars.

EABL posted a 21 percent growth in beer sales and a 47 percent growth in sales of spirits during the year under review.

"I do see the continued growth rates of spirits ahead of the growth rates of beer, which will of course give spirits a bigger share of our overall business," Hainsworth said.

Staying Power of Mail: Why Mail Succeeds in the Digital Age ...

Illustration of a cartoon-type video game screen showing the power of mail

It?s 2012, and the media landscape is more fractured than ever. More than 900 million people are using Facebook, including your grandmother. It?s also an age of Twitter and LinkedIn, texting and mobile apps. Even personal computers suddenly have become yesterday?s news. Now, lives revolve around smartphones and tablets. Yet, as crowded as the media space has become, direct mail still manages to not only fit, but remain a focal point for smart CMOs everywhere. Through it all, the staying power of direct mail remains undiminished.

A recent study by ExactTarget, an international company that specializes in interactive marketing, helps illustrate direct mail?s continued relevance. The survey asked consumers to indicate how they would like to receive 11 different types of messages. A headline in ExactTarget?s 2012 Channel Preference Survey screams the results: ?DIRECT MAIL LIVES!?

Survey Echoes Recent Research

The ExactTarget study gathered detailed input from 1,481 consumers of all ages on how they prefer to receive various types of information. The choices:

? E-mail ? Direct mail ? Telephone ? Text messaging ? Mobile app ? Social media

Out of 11 different categories of marketing messages, direct mail was chosen as the most acceptable means of communication in four categories, tied with e-mail as most acceptable in two others, and came in a close second behind e-mail in another four categories.

According to the survey, 65 percent of consumers have made a purchase as a result of a direct mail piece. The survey report provided the following analysis: ?In the face of always-on channels like e-mail, SMS and social networks, consumers appreciate direct mail?s tangibility, flexibility and once-a-day pace. It also remains the only channel where unsolicited messages are acceptable to a majority of consumers.?

Other recent surveys on consumer preference provided similar results:

? In 2011, Epsilon, a multichannel marketing service, surveyed nearly 5,000 consumers, including more than 2,200 in the United States. More than one-third expressed a preference for direct mail over the multitude of other channels. Of those surveyed, 60 percent said going to the mailbox and receiving a piece of mail provided an emotional boost. Consumers said they found mail to be more trustworthy than other forms of communication. The study found that the preference for mail extended to the 18- to 34-year-old demographic as well.

? In 2010, a Durham+Company survey found direct mail to be twice as effective as e-mail for soliciting donations online. Further underlining the importance of direct mail to motivate online giving, 37 percent who give online say that when they receive a direct mail appeal from a charity, they use the charity?s website to give the donation.

So what is the reason for direct mail?s staying power? We sought the views of seven experts, including the author of the ExactTarget study: Jeffrey Rohrs, vice president, Marketing Research and Education of the Indianapolis-based company. Here?s what they told us ?

Denver-based Heinrich Marketing likes to think of itself as the CSI of the marketing world, asking the tough questions before getting the creative department involved. Heinrich managing director Laura Sonderup says the research has shown that mail continues to be one of the most cost-effective methods for targeting that any marketer can deploy: ?In many instances, mail allows us to localize lead generation far more efficiently than other marketing channels ? down to the census tract and neighborhood level when necessary. Our largest clients insist that direct mail be included in their marketing plans as a means of maximizing budgets and increasing return on investment.?

Illustrations of 6 cartoon-type video game icons showing the power of mail1. Mail Is Tangible

Direct mail, says Jeffrey Rohrs of ExactTarget, ?provides a tangible experience that digital media does not replicate. And in a world of hyper-fragmentation of communication channels, where you can get a phone call, text, e-mail, post on Facebook, message on Twitter, message on apps, there?s something about mail and how it cuts through the digital clutter that remains attractive to consumers.?

Jamie Matusek, marketing director of Austin, Texas?based QuantumDigital, echoes that view: ?From a consumer perspective, yes, the majority of us have mobile device in hand 24/7 ? but there is something to be said about a targeted mail piece and offer from a company I do business with. It?s a great way to help in making bigger decisions like home improvement projects, or even just getting an invitation to try a new restaurant in my local neighborhood. Mail tends to break through the digital noise for a bit and offers a moment for a targeted message to resonate. Plus, it offers a great way for businesses to focus on local neighborhood marketing, hitting potential customers who are close to home.?

2. Mail Integrates Well

Says Jeffrey Rohrs of ExactTarget: ?As I look at our 2012 survey compared to our 2008 survey, the real story is that we have multichannel consumers due to the explosion of devices, so you?d better have cross-channel communication strategies. You need to be integrating your channels so that you can influence your consumers in different ways. This is where direct mail can work hand-in-glove with e-mail and social media. There will always be a place for channels that break the mold and pleasantly surprise consumers.?

3. People Like Opening Mail

Part of the power of mail, adds ExactTarget?s Jeffrey Rohrs, lies in the mundane consumer ceremony of padding to the mailbox each day: ?There?s a moment every day where folks go to the mailbox, and they take that brief respite and they look at what they?ve received. It is a ritual. It goes beyond habit. It is part of what people do. And those marketers who can get there cost-effectively and creatively will continue to have an opportunity to differentiate themselves and their brand in interesting ways that will produce a return on investment.?

4. There?s Less Competition in Direct Mail

Jon Yokogawa, vice president of consumer engagement for interTrend, a full-service communications agency in Long Beach, Calif., contends that the technology age has actually boosted the impact of direct mail. ?Your e-mail inbox is the new mailbox, filled with bills, letters from friends, family and work,? he says. ?So the amount of paper in your mailbox is less. Therefore, you would be more inclined to look more carefully at any type of mail that you do receive from the Postal Service.??

Content marketing expert Joe Pulizzi, the founder of the Content Marketing Institute, Cleveland, and the largest content marketing event, Content Marketing World, warns marketers against becoming too ?infatuated? with other channels, as mail continues to get the job done. ?For certain goals like getting immediate attention, direct mail is perfect,? says Pulizzi. ?There?s so much less competition in the print channel these days, the opportunity to get noticed is probably as great as it?s been in decades.?

5. Mail Builds Loyalty

Joe Pulizzi of the Content Marketing Institute by underscores the value that mail has in cultivating loyalty and brand evangelism among consumers. ?We know from our research at the Content Marketing Institute that only about 30 percent of our customers create and distribute a custom magazine, but we think there?s great opportunity in that channel to build loyalty,? he says. ?Social media is selective. It?s hard to get on that must-read list. If you just go through any airport and walk around, you?ll see all the electronic devices and, at the same time, you?ll still see younger Millennials who are holding magazines, especially females, because it?s still such a visual, tactile media.?

6. Mail Is More Sophisticated NowIllustration of a cartoon-type video game character showing the power of mail

Jon Yokogawa of interTrend points out that the evolution of mail messaging ? from the refinement of offers to new personalization tools ? has also buoyed the channel and confirmed its ongoing relevance: ?The sophistication of mail messaging has greatly improved over the years. Top companies use the platform, and that builds credibility. Nowadays, direct mail is not just for the remnant budgets of smaller clients. Many industries see this form of marketing as a proven medium, having better and actual measurements (ROI) than traditional TV, print, outdoor advertising or radio.?

Louis Maldonado, managing director of New York-based d exp?sito & partners, an agency specializing in integrated communications, including direct mail, points out how the digital age has added to mail?s power, introducing elements such as QR Codes, augmented reality and SnapTags to mail marketing: ?Direct marketing has experienced a resurgence of excitement given the new technologies and tools available now. The increased targetability of e-mail and mobile channels, as well as the enhanced engagement and dialogue opportunities afforded through social media, serve to complement and fuel response rates to the tried-and-true channels, like direct mail and DRTV.?

7. Mail Helps You Target

8. Mail Delivers Results

Whatever its evolution, direct mail ultimately continues to resonate with marketers for one primary reason: It gets results. Robert Salta, owner of Maryland-based DirectMail.com and a 30-year direct marketing veteran, has strong views about mail?s staying power: ?It?s all about results. Direct mail works,? he says. ?The majority of people will open and read direct mail, but often will choose to ignore e-mail solicitations. The fundamentals of direct mail haven?t changed, partly because their efficacy has been proven time after time. What has changed is the advent of data and digital print technology, and both have benefited direct mail immeasurably.?

(AP Photo/Ricardo Arduengo)

(AP) ? Tropical Storm Isaac strengthened slightly as it spun toward the Dominican Republic and Haiti, but seemed unlikely to gain enough steam early Friday to strike the island of Hispaniola as a hurricane.

The storm's failure to gain the kind of strength in the Caribbean that forecasters initially projected made it more likely that Isaac won't become a hurricane until it enters the Gulf of Mexico, said Eric Blake, a forecaster with U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

"We think it could become a hurricane on Monday," Blake said late Thursday. "It would be somewhere over the Gulf of Mexico."

The latest five-day forecast showed the storm's path shifting to the west, possibly making landfall near the Alabama-Mississippi border, Blake said. But he said it was "too early to know" the exact course and stressed that Florida's Gulf Coast, including Tampa, the site of next week's Republican National Convention, was still in the forecast cone.

The storm dumped heavy rain Thursday across eastern and southern Puerto Rico and whipped up waves as high as 10 feet (3 meters) in the Caribbean as it churned across the region.

Friday morning, Isaac was centered about 175 miles (280 kilometers) south-southwest of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and its maximum sustained winds had increased to near 50 mph (80 kph). It was moving west near 15 mph (24 kph), according to the hurricane center.

In flood-prone Haiti, Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe urged people to avoid crossing rivers, to tape their windows, and to stay calm, saying "panic creates more problems."

Lamothe and other Haitian officials said the government had set aside about $50,000 in emergency funds and had buses and 32 boats on standby for evacuations.

But among many Haitians, the notion of disaster preparedness in a country where most people get by on about $2 a day was met with a shrug.

"We don't have houses that can bear a hurricane," said Jeanette Lauredan, who lives in a tent camp in the crowded Delmas district of Port-au-Prince.

About 400,000 people remain in settlement camps comprised of shacks and tarps in the wake of Haiti's devastating 2010 earthquake.

So far, Isaac itself had caused no reported injuries or deaths, but police in Puerto Rico said a 75-year-old woman died near the capital of San Juan on Wednesday when she fell off a balcony while filling a drum with water in preparation for the storm.

In the Dominican Republic, authorities began to evacuate people from low-lying areas but encountered resistance.

"Nobody wants to leave their homes for fear they'll get robbed," said Francisco Mateo, community leader of the impoverished La Cienaga neighborhood in Santo Domingo, the capital.

The Dominican government planned to close all of the country's nine airports by dawn Friday, said Alejandro Herrera, civil aviation director. Schools closed by Thursday afternoon.

The storm's approach prompted military authorities at the U.S. base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to cancel pretrial hearings for five prisoners charged in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. They also evacuated about 200 people, including legal teams and relatives of Sept. 11 victims.

Blake, the U.S. forecaster, said that while Isaac hadn't strengthened much in the Caribbean, it could gain power as it moves away from Cuba. "When it moves back over water, it has a chance to restrengthen," he said.

Organizers of next week's Republican National Convention in Tampa were working closely with state and federal authorities on monitoring storm as they prepared for the arrival of 70,000 delegates, journalists and protesters.

"We continue to move forward with our planning and look forward to a successful convention," convention CEO William Harris said in a statement.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said RNC officials had consulted with state, local and federal authorities and there were no plans to cancel the convention.

Out in the eastern Atlantic, another tropical storm, Joyce, was downgraded to a tropical depression late Thursday, and posed no threat to land. The hurricane center in Miami said Joyce had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph (55 kph) and that it was becoming disorganized.

Tim Burton's 'Frankenweenie' to open BFI London Film Festival 2012

Tim Burton's Frankenweenie will open this year's BFI London Film Festival.

The stop motion animation sees a young boy (Charlie Tahan) attempting to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life via a risky science experiment.

Frankenweenie, which is a remake of Burton's 1984 short of the same name, features a voice cast including Winona Ryder, Martin Landau, Christopher Lee and Catherine O'Hara.

Its screening on the opening night of the 56th London Film Festival, October 10, will mark the film's European premiere.

"Funny, dark and whimsical, this gloriously crafted, stop-motion 3D animation from Tim Burton ? the reigning prince of outsiders ? playfully turns the Frankenstein story on its bolted-on head," said new Festival Director Clare Stewart.

"Frankenweenie is a perfect choice of opener ? it's a film about the magic of movies from one of cinema's great visionaries.

"Tim Burton has chosen London as his home city and hundreds of talented British craftspeople have contributed to this production."

The full lineup for this year's BFI London Film Festival will be announced on September 5.

Last year's festival programme included Michel Hazanavicius's The Artist, Steve McQueen's Shame, David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method, George Clooney's The Ides of March and Alexander Payne's The Descendants.

Footprints of cretaceous dinosaur found at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center

ScienceDaily (Aug. 21, 2012) ? About 110 million light years away, the bright, barred spiral galaxy NGC 3259 was just forming stars in dark bands of dust and gas. Here on the part of the Earth where NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center would eventually be built, a plant-eating dinosaur sensed predators nearby and quickened its pace, leaving a deep imprint in the Cretaceous mud.

On Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, noted dinosaur hunter Ray Stanford shared the location of that footprint with Goddard's facility management and the Washington Post newspaper.

"This was a large, armored dinosaur," Stanford said. "Think of it as a four-footed tank. It was quite heavy, there's a quite a ridge or push-up here. ? Subsequently the sand was bound together by iron-oxide or hematite, so it gave us a nice preservation, almost like concrete."

Stanford, a "proud amateur dinosaur tracker" has had several papers published, including the discovery of a new species of nodosaur from a fossilized hatchling found near the University of Maryland in College Park. He previously confirmed the authenticity of this track with David Weishampel of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, author of the book "Dinosaurs of the East Coast."

He had material from the same Cretaceous-era sedimentary rock dated, with help from the US Geological Survey, to approximately 110- to 112-million years old, by analyzing pollen grains sealed in the stone. The Cretaceous Period ran between 145.5 and 65.5 million years ago, and was the last period of the Mesozoic Era.

Goddard Facilities Manager Alan Binstock said the agency considers the footprint and its location "sensitive but unclassified."

The footprint is on federal land, so improperly removing it could potentially violate three laws: the Antiquities Act, the Archaeological Resources Protection Act and the Paleontological Resources Preservation Act.

NASA officials will next consult with the State of Maryland and paleontologists to form a plan for documenting and preserving the find, Binstock said.

Stanford also identified and presented several smaller footprints -- three-toed, flesh-eating therapods -- to Goddard officials from the same site.

He called the location of the find "poetic."

"Space scientists may walk along here, and they're walking exactly where this big, bungling heavy armored dinosaur walked, maybe 110 to 112-million years ago," Stanford said.

We don't have the money for a spending spree - The Nation

Home ? opinion ? We don't have the money for a spending spree

editorial

The Nation August 21, 2012 1:00 am

Although the budget bill will have to be further deliberated upon in the Senate, the government should easily win approval because of its majority control in the House. But this does not mean the government has the right to ineffectively use taxpayers' money to finance short-term political promises regardless of the consequences.

The Bt2.4 trillion that the government plans to spend in fiscal 2012-13 is no small amount. But the real question is whether the money will be spent wisely, to serve the interests of the public.

The government should not be content with the thought that it is entitled to spend taxpayers' money because of its massive majority in Parliament. A number of spending plans will have to be financed by the money of future generations because the government needs to borrow more, with an obligation to pay in the future.

The target expenditure is Bt2.4 trillion, but the Finance Ministry expects tax revenue collection of only Bt2.1 billion, resulting in a budget deficit of Bt300 billion. This is not to mention the extraordinary borrowing of Bt350 billion to invest in flood-prevention projects and other public investments.

During last week's House debate the government could not clearly explain how it would finance these populist projects. If the government plans to spend more, the Finance Ministry should have placed equal importance on how to find additional sources of revenue by, for instance, reforming the tax base.

The targeted tax revenue of Bt2.1 trillion shows that the country's taxation base remains inadequate, representing only 16-17 per cent of gross domestic product. Reform would enable the government to finance future projects in a steady manner, because it has obligations to support welfare projects such as healthcare, education and welfare for an increasing number of senior citizens. Land tax has not been mentioned, even though it should be a high priority.

Instead of looking at the tools available to raise more revenue to finance its mammoth spending plans, the government is pressuring the Bank of Thailand to use foreign reserves - which exist to ensure monetary stability - to finance its populist, short-term political promises.

The vast budget is meant to excite those voters who are the target of these populist schemes. But in reality they may not be the real beneficiaries, since the ineffective rice price-pledging programme has shown that farmers are not the major beneficiaries of that particular subsidy.

The question has to be asked whether a number of these projects are necessary. The controversial rice programme aside, there is also the government subsidy given to people to buy their first car. Of course this project will make consumers feel good, but the government should focus on developing mass transit systems and logistics to save imported fuel and reduce air pollution. Ineffective spending of the Oil Fund will cause problems for the country's fiscal stance and the stability of domestic oil prices.

The government has placed high priority on economic growth, but there are other elements that are equally important. For instance, Thailand's growth should be able to rise on a solid foundation. Otherwise our economic growth prospects will face limitations. Unsteady growth right now is reflected by a lack of labour.

Apart from the migration of workers from rural to urban areas, Thailand also has to import foreign migrants to fill gaps in the workforce, but this has led to problems of abuse and illegal migration.

Growth should see the country gaining the ability to use advanced technology to offset the lack of cheap labour, without having to worry about the consequences of massive urban migration and illegal foreign workers.

The huge budget allocation is likely to leave negative impacts if the money is not spent wisely. The government's plans to encourage consumption and give away easy money will result in an increase in farmers' household debts. Farmers' credit cards will further raise their debt level if they are not educated about money management.

Let's hope this money will be carefully spent to produce long-term results, because every Thai is a stakeholder in this spending spree.

Women's Identity in Christ - The Gentle Savior ? A Bible Study for ...

Last week I shared a guest post from my friend Lisa, who has been struggling with her identity as a Christian wife and mother. I mentioned in my summary that some of us hold a misconception about wife/mother/homemaker being the role God most wants for women.

This picture of a women?s ?place? seems to be based primarily on some statements in Paul?s New Testament writings, such as I Timothy 5:14 and Titus 2:4-5.?

These statements certainly describe some responsibilities for women (specifically, ?younger? ones), but read out of context and alone they present an incomplete picture. A fuller image comes into focus when we consider what the Gospels say on the subject. In the Gospels we learn about what Jesus said to and about women. If we believe that Jesus was God in the flesh and the perfect representation of His being, then we must believe that Jesus? attitudes toward women reflect those of His Father.?

Here are some interesting facts to consider:?

  • Jesus called women to serve him, not only to serve their families as proxies for him. He didn?t call all women disciples to leave their homes, but he did call some women to do that. Women both traveled with him in his ministry and helped support him financially (Luke 8:1-3, Matthew 27:55-56). Some of these women were identified as being married while others were mothers (probably of grown children) and others were neither wives nor mothers. Interestingly, Jesus didn?t send any of the married women home to focus on their families nor did he advise the single women to try to find husbands.?

?

  • Jesus valued discipleship even above motherhood and family. Jesus talked to a few women who were mothers (Matthew 15:21-28) and acknowledged that women bore children (Matthew 24:19, Luke 23:29). He blessed children and referred to them as precious to God and model members of his kingdom. He never taught anything specifically about how to be a mother or about the significance of a mother?s role. When one woman offered her opinion that his own mother deserved to be blessed, Jesus responded, ?Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it? (Luke 11:27-29). Likewise, when his listeners once noted that Jesus? family had arrived to see him, he pointed to his disciples and said, ?Here are my mother and my brothers.?For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother? (Matthew 12:49-50).?
    ?
  • Jesus saw women as individuals, independent of their families. In the Gospels, Jesus never spoke to a woman whose husband was present, unless you count his mother (and possibly the wife of synagogue ruler Jairus). Jesus taught women directly (Luke 10:38-42), included women as examples in his teachings, and engaged women in lengthy spiritual conversations (John 4, John 11). He was concerned about the depth of their faith (Luke 7:36-50; Matthew 15:21-28) and devotion (John 12:1-7) and the accuracy of their beliefs about his identity and their understandings of God.?

?

These stories in the Gospels occurred before the establishment of the church, and they were recorded by the Gospel writers during the time Paul was writing his letters and possible even a decade or two after. Clearly, what we have from Paul is not the whole story.

The more complete story of God and women is this: Jesus calls women first and foremost to be his disciples. We are to follow him in every part of our lives. Sometimes that means that we follow him in our closest family relationships?including with?our?spouse, children, even parents and siblings. Yet, family is not his top priority. Sometimes Jesus actually calls us to leave family in pursuit of him (Matthew 10:37-38). And the prime time to ?leave? family is when they have become an idol?the primary focus of our passion, people we love more than Jesus.?

My dear sisters, Jesus didn?t come to earth to call women only to be wives and mothers. He calls us to be his disciples as we live out all of our social and cultural roles. He calls us to serve, teach, evangelize, listen, encourage, counsel, labor, give, sacrifice, and love. Yes, we do these things for the people in our home, but not for them alone. The world Jesus loves and died for is much too big for that limitation.

So if you ever feel unfulfilled by an exclusive focus on your family, consider that God may indeed be calling you to broader service. Nothing about that should make you feel guilty.?

If you have experience with spiritually healthy ways this has played out in your life, please share it with us in the comments box below.

HBT: Clemens will pitch again after all

The Rocket returns. No, not to the majors, but he will be pitching again:

Sugar Land Skeeters president Matt O?Brien and Roger Clemens? agent Randy Hendricks told FOX 26 Sports that Roger Clemens worked out for the Skeeters today and will sign with the team.

Hendricks and O?Brien told FOX Clemens will start for the Skeeters this Saturday in Sugar Land.

Skeeters officials said Clemens had a full workout today, was clocked at 87 mph and is in great shape.

Sugar Land is in the Atlantic League in independent ball so it?s not like it should be too hard to crack that rotation. I mean, if the Skeeters didn?t want him, the only other place around with lower standards would be prison leagues and the Houston Astros.

Now: we need the Lancaster Barnstormers to sign Barry Bonds so that everyone?s head can explode at once.
