Editor?s Note: The Power of Moms is a website for mothers of all religions (and for mothers who are not necessarily religious). Each Sunday, we post a spiritual essay, and we would love to gather a wide variety of perspectives and ideas. ?Our goal is to be respectful of all beliefs while simultaneously offering opportunities to share meaningful, spiritual thoughts with one another.

Matthew 5:13?(From the New Testament)
?Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted?? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.?
Salt isn?t very tasty all by itself.? You?d never say, ?Wow, that salt tastes incredible!?? However, when the salt is MISSING, you definitely notice.? Have you ever eaten a salt-less piece of bread?? One time I made barbecue chicken pizza calzones for a friend of mine who?d had a rough week.? After I dropped it off (and she oohed and ahhed over how great they looked), I realized that I had forgotten the salt.? My heart sank, and I called her on the phone and said, ?Don?t eat it.? I forgot the salt!? I?m so, so sorry.? It?s going to taste horrible.?? She was very nice about it and said that was just fine, but I knew that leaving out just one teaspoon of salt had made the dinner pretty much inedible.? And it?s not the same if you just sprinkle salt on top.? It needs to be baked INTO the bread.
In many ways, the role of salt compares to the roles of mothers.? Mothers aren?t mothers by themselves.? They need someone TO mother.? Have you ever heard the saying, ?I?d be a great wife and mother if it weren?t for my husband and children.?? That statement will elicit some laughs, but we all know that we need a family in order to have the full experience of motherhood.? Likewise, our families need us.? They might not notice how often we step in and influence their lives, but when a mother is missing, there is a definite void in the home.? And you can?t just ?sprinkle??your mothering on?at the end?rattling off a bunch of?random instructions and statements of adoration.? Your mothering needs to be ?baked in? to your child through?countless quality interactions.
Another reason salt reminds me of mothers is because salt doesn?t call attention to itself, but it makes everything around it taste better.? Mothers are queens behind the scenes.? We do a lot of work that no one will ever notice, and we don?t ask for praise and attention, but because of our efforts, our families feel more loved, more secure, more important.? My job isn?t to become a superstar to the world.? My job is to be a light to support my family, so we can all receive the brightness of the Son.
Salt is essential.? It is in your blood, your sweat, and your tears.? No food storage supply is complete without several pounds of salt because we simply cannot survive without it.? Without mothers, the human race would not survive.? Bearing and rearing our children isn?t just something we do for fun.? It is absolutely essential to the continuation and health of the planet.
I like to think of my work as a wife and mother as sprinkling salt.? Sometimes I?ll do my daughter?s hair extra special for her awards ceremony (sprinkle, sprinkle), I?ll draw a heart on my husband?s lunch bag (sprinkle, sprinkle), or I?ll give my baby a little massage with scented lotion (sprinkle, sprinkle).? Then there are ?dashes? of hugs after family prayer, of nice, clean laundry folded with love, of homemade pizza everyone adores?.? These are the special things I contribute to my family.
All who are doing the will of the Lord are the salt of the earth, and to keep our savour, we need to stay close to Him.? He has the power to make our influence exactly what it needs to be?.not too much, not too little, but just right.
QUESTION:? What have you done to be a more ?salty? Mom?
CHALLENGE:? Do a little ?sprinkling? and ?dashing? today to add savor to your mothering.
