State Rep. Billy Broomfield ousts incumbent Aneice Liddell in Moss Point mayor's race

MOSS POINT, Mississippi - Longtime State Rep. Billy Broomfield knocked off incumbent mayor Aneice Liddell in Tuesday's Democratic primary on Tuesday, earning 1,492 votes in the unofficial totals.

Broomfield advances to face Independent challengers Dobbs Dennis and John Mosley Jr. in the June general election for the city's top post.

Liddell, the city's first female mayor, received 1,109 votes and Irby received 101.

Poll workers said the voter turnout was good even during the early hours. Most voters had strong opinions about why they were voting for Liddell or Broomfield.

Broomfield, a longtime legislator serving House district 110 since 1991, retired in 2009 after a 37-year career at Ingalls Shipbuilding, where he was a project manager.

He has said he is looking forward to forging strong relationships with other government leaders. And if elected, he would focus on jobs, education, economic growth and efficiency of city services.

"Moss Point has premiere industrial property such as the former paper mill site," Broomfield said in announcing his campaign. "At the same time, the National Audubon Society has selected Moss Point as the site of its newest regional education center. We will grow these opportunities and others to increase Moss Point's tax base and lower property tax rates.

Jhai Keeton, 28, said he was supporting Rep. Broomfield because of his experience in the Mississippi Legislature. "I really commend Aneice. I've worked with her on two or three projects. She did a great job. She really cares about the people, and she was always available.

"What I look forward to in Billy Broomfield is someone who has a little bit more political experience. I understand that there has to be working relationship between local and state government. People have to be able to work in collaboration."

He said it would be an advantage for the city to have someone at the local level who has state experience, and if Broomfield wins residents should hold him accountable for working with other officials to provide the city with funds, and other needed aid.

"At the end of the day, when it comes down to the meat and potatoes, the revitalization of our community, relationships and resources are imperative."
