As the Opus College of Business has begun a process of fully globalizing the MBA curriculum, a special pressure has emerged to justify the presence of courses that serve distinctly global agendas. MGMT 805 ? International Business is such a course, and the challenge here is to answer the question, ?Since all (or most) courses do or will contain global content and perspectives, what does it mean to label a specific course as global or international?? Or, to put it even more simply, what does it mean to make a course ?more global? than the curriculum as a whole?
We will discover ? through group work, case studies, guest presentations, readings and in class discussion ? that there are distinct elements of global business that are unique or that require more thorough exploration than can be offered in courses that must also be attentive to technical subject matter, tools, skills and knowledge (finance, marketing, accounting). Thus, in MGMT 805 students will find a course where global issues are not specifically explored through the lens of functional subject matter (say, financial management); but rather, global is the central and functional subject matter that will be considered through a global lens. As will be seen, that reversal of perspective is significant.
Broadly, then, this course is organized to introduce and seek answers to the following three questions:
- What makes operating globally different from operating domestically?
- How do those differences affect organizational strategy and management?
- How do those differences affect me (the student)?
To that end, the course will follow a process of introducing and investigating concepts and principles of global business, with a specific intention of moving the investigation into an application of concepts and principles into ?real world? settings, and?ultimately?providing students with opportunities to reflect on the impact of these concepts, principles and applications to their own work lives.?Students who want to?find out more about the course, should feel free to contact me at pcyoung@stthomas.edu.
